Job Description
The Pharmacy Technician I performs medication preparation and distribution tasks under a pharmacist's supervision.
Responsibilities
Knowledgeable of generic and trade names of medication. Knows dosage forms and drug strengths. Stocks medication and accurately selects medication for distribution and dispensing
Utilizes drug distribution systems. Utilizes reports to accurately restock automated dispensing cabinets. Accurately prepares medication for dispensing
Compounds pharmaceuticals for parenteral administration. Uses aseptic technique. Uses a laminar air flow hood, compounding aseptic isolator, or clean room as assigned. Follows USP standards
Packages bulk items in unit dose packages and keeps appropriate records
Fills medication floor stock requisitions
Replenishes CPR carts and EMS boxes
Inspects and maintains drug storage locations. Knowledgeable of drug storage requirements. Appropriately responds to temperature alarms
Reports medication errors and controlled substance losses. Files complete reports, analyzes causes, evaluates alternative strategies for avoidance, and makes recommendations for improvement
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required Education:
High School Diploma / GED
Required Experience:
Sufficient math skills to readily learn metric system, metric conversion and ratio and proportion calculations. Sufficient verbal skills to readily learn medical terminology
Preferred Experience:
Hospital and/or retail experience
Required Certifications and Licensures:
Must be registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the Virginia State Board of Pharmacy
Preferred Certifications and Licensures:
Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Certification
