    GENERAL PURPOSE

    Under general supervision, leads a team of inspectors and performs inspections of residential/commercial buildings and related systems to ensure compliance with applicable building codes and to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of the public; performs related work as assigned.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED

    Works under the general supervision of the Senior Building Inspector; supervises subordinate Building Inspector I staff and clerical support staff.

    This is the advanced journey level in the Building Inspector job series. This class may be distinguished from the lower level by the complexity and difficulty of work performed and by the direct supervision of lower level inspectors and clerical support personnel.
    PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    The following essential functions are critical to the job. Incumbents are expected to perform these duties with or without a reasonable accommodation.

    • Provides direction, training, guidance, and assistance to lower-level inspectors.
    • Interprets, applies, and ensures compliance with building codes and regulations.
    • Develops, assigns, and follows daily inspection schedules and travel routes.
    • Reviews building plans, specifications, and engineering reports.
    • Conducts site inspections of residential/commercial properties.
    • Inspects construction, alteration, demolition, and use of buildings.
    • Inspects various building systems.
    • Determines pass/fail inspections.
    • Performs joint inspections with relevant departments.
    • Prepares accurate records of inspection activities.
    • Prepares various forms, reports, and documents.
    • Utilizes computer software for data entry.
    • Follows safety procedures and maintains a safe work environment.
    • Coordinates activities with other departments.
    • Communicates effectively with various stakeholders.
    • Maintains knowledge of codes and standards.
    • Performs general clerical tasks.
    • Provides assistance to other departments.
    • Demonstrates proficiency in computer software.
    • Performs other assigned duties.
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and Experience:
    • High School diploma or equivalent plus vocational/technical training in building construction trades; AND three (3) years building inspection experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    Required Licenses or Certifications:
    • Must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License.
    • One or more International Code Council certifications from the general inspection category.
    Required Knowledge of:
    • City organization, operations, and codes.
    • Building and safety codes and regulations.
    • Planning and zoning ordinances.
    • Evaluation techniques.
    • Construction industry practices.
    • Occupational safety measures.
    • Supervisory practices.
    Required Skill in:
    • Interpreting and applying codes and regulations.
    • Checking project details and specifications.
    • Organizing technical records.
    • Utilizing business software.
    • Effective communication.
    • Establishing cooperative relationships.
    Physical Demands / Work Environment:
    • Work primarily outdoors in moderate temperatures.
    • Requires physical tasks like bending, climbing, and crawling.
    • Requires good vision and color discrimination.
    • May entail exposure to various elements.
