    Description


    The Engineering Supervisor - Gears will be responsible for supervising/hiring gear engineers and will have a strong technical foundation for the design and analysis of gears.

    This position will be the supervisor of the gear section that provide support of the Gear section within the Geared Systems Group.

    Job responsibilities of the Gear section include gear and spline design and analysis and development for new programs, and problem resolution for new and existing products.

    Product Engineers in the Gear section will analyze customer information, such as duty cycle, package space, and other requirements and work with internal and external customers to design gears for a geared system that meet the required life and quality targets.

    In addition, Product Engineers in the gear section will provide technical guidance to Product Engineering during development, manufacturing, and application life of a program.

    It is the gear design supervisor's responsibility to ensure that adequate support from the gear design section is being directed to address product development and design issues as required in a timely manner and with a quality focus – not just for automotive, but for propulsion systems in a variety of industries and applications.


    Key Accountabilities:


    Responsible for assigning the engineering resources from the gear section to support the design and analysis of gears and splines in a timely manner for new and existing products.

    Responsible for conducting the necessary analysis to ensure optimum gear designs, with regard to function, durability and quality requirements, for the program.

    Interfaces with various functional areas such as, Product Engineering teams, manufacturing and purchasing to coordinate a smooth and timely release of gear prints for use in geared products for production.

    Develop engineering tools for evaluating gear performance, or for improving design analysis time.
    Be alert to new technologies and the opportunities to incorporate into products and manufacturing processes.
    Provide ongoing consultation and problem-solving support to the businesses regarding gear and spline technology.
    Benchmark internal and external best practices regarding gear design and its application to geared products.
    Support creation of gear related engineering documentation, such as design guides, design Lessons learned, Best Practices, etc.
    Work with

    material expert on material selectio

    n and on failure analysis.
    Work with internal NVH team on gear noise resolution as needed.
    Support/lead resolution of critical issues related to gears.
    Mediate between cross-functional areas as needed.
    Develop resources and communications to educate key customers and end users of gears.
    Identify opportunities to develop new internal and external training programs and resources as needed.

    Deliver training in subject area as needed by the business to increase the knowledge base of the applicable organizations with respect to gear technology.

    Qualifications

    Master of Science in Engineering is preferred.
    10 to 15 years of direct engineering experience in the field of gear technology
    Previous

    supervisory experience preferre

    d, with a demonstrated history of employee growth and development.
    A combination of higher education and gear design /manufacturing experience is an alternate consideration.
    Strong functional knowledge of

    driveline and transmission systems

    design; casting, forging, machining, and general manufacturing processes.
    Familiarity with the design and manufacturing of

    splines and cylindrical, bevel, and hypoid gears.
    Capable of reading and interpreting blueprints and gear inspection data.
    Desired familiarity with

    AGMA DIN, and ISO gear standards.
    Proficiency using Excel and Power Point. Comfortable in using and interpreting the results from computer analysis tools.
    Experience with analysis software tools such as Romax, MASTA, LDP, ANSOL T3D etc. preferred.
    Strong functional knowledge of CAD software applications. Knowledge of other common engineering software applications a plus (FEA, CFD, etc.). Able to perform fundamental mechanical engineering calculations.

    Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

    Ability to interact with internal and external representatives from sales, engineering, manufacturing and quality.
    Must possess good verbal and written skills. The ability to communicate effectively within a group or team. Must be able to articulate precise instructions and effectively transfer information. Ability to provide support for technical presentations to customers.
