    Description

    Perform all necessary functions as a school guidance counselor.

    Qualifications: Appropriate South Carolina Certification

    1. Shall hold a valid South Carolina certificate in guidance and counseling at specified levels
    2. Shall possess highly developed human relations and communication skills
    3. Shall possess personal qualities of objectivity, caring, tact, empathy, sincerity, tolerance, and emotional stability
    4. Shall have had successful experience or training in the diagnosis of learning and behavioral problems of children
    5. To develop positive attitudes about self and school
    6. Behavior management (positive discipline)
    7. Appropriate use of private office space, telephone, group counseling space
    Responsibilities:
    1. To provide appropriate services, to all students in 6-12, ages 6-21, that will enable each to achieve optimally
    2. To provide services for students to prevent the development of potential problems and concerns
    3. To provide remedial services to assist students in coping with problems which interfere with academic achievement and appropriate behavior
    4. Responsible for identifying guidance needs of students
    5. Responsible for goals based evaluation with administrator
    6. Responsible for maintaining proper certification
    7. Responsible for continuing professional growth through participation in State Department of Education workshops and conferences as approved by principal
    8. Responsible for referrals to community agencies and community services to the school
    9. Works with others consistently in a cooperative and respectful manner
    10. Expand knowledge and expertise through regular reading of current publications
    11. To promote positive social interaction with peers and authority figures
    12. To teach decision-making and problem-solving skills
    13. To reduce inappropriate behavior
    14. Expand knowledge and expertise through participation in teacher in-service and principal approved conferences.
    15. Provide a written guidance plan as deemed necessary for student(s)
    16. Works to provide activities to enhance the personal, social, and emotional development of students
    17. Improvement of academic achievement through enhancement of student self-concept
    18. May collaborate with teachers on student behavior management plans
    19. Provide indirect services for students through coordination with parents upon parent request
    20. Makes referrals to district office staff or community agency for students in need of special services
    21. Provide students with direct services to meet their needs
    22. Available to students, teachers, and parents throughout the school day
    23. Provide group guidance on topics of general need
    24. Provide individual counseling for confidential concerns of students
    25. Contribute to student academic achievement through services in the affective domain
    26. Assistance to teachers and to students for improving classroom behavior and peer relationships
    27. Provide principal approved curriculum instruction to meet student needs in the areas of character education, puberty education, career education, and drug education
    28. Coordinate with teachers regarding affective materials needed for counselor and classroom use
    29. Recommendation of affective books for the staff professional library
    30. Daily assistance with supervising and transporting students in the carline
    31. Assist with supervising and transporting students during school-wide activities, events, and field trips
    32. Serve as a member of school activity committees
    33. Performs other duties as assigned by an appropriate administrator or their representative.
