Introduction

MWRD's Internship Program offers paid internship positions. While the main focus is on wastewater management, there are opportunities to gain knowledge and practical experience in a wide range of functions in each department.

Paid Interns

Paid interns are limited to 119 working days per calendar year and receive $18.00 per hour.

• Letter of recommendation from a class instructor, professor, or Internship Coordinator from current school or university.
• Cover letter stating interest in position.

Eligibility Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program in an accredited college or university and will be enrolled in the 2024/2025 school year.
• Permanent residency within the territorial boundaries of the MWRD (students may attend school outside the territorial boundaries).
• You must be a citizen or national of the United States, or an individual who is otherwise legally authorized to work in the United States.

Description:

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District is seeking an Electrical Engineering Intern in the Maintenance and Operations Department. The prospective intern will:

• Perform work relating to process instrumentation and computer control systems such as Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and Supervisory Control, Data Acquisition Systems (SCADA), and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC).
• Assist in the design and maintenance of process instrumentation and computer control systems for water reclamation facilities.
• Prepare cost estimates for projects involving process instrumentation and/or computer control systems.
• Prepare and reviews contract specifications and plans for process instrumentation and computer control systems, review contractor submittals for compliance.
• Maintain, troubleshoot and manage process control systems, including system database, network, and security and perform routing backup of system.
• Create, modify and maintain documentation of the process control system including procedural guidelines, required reporting, trend analysis and historical archives.
• Assist in managing DCS spare parts related to the process control systems.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:

• Knowledge of the principles and applications of process control instrumentation technology, including analog and digital signals and Proportional Integral and Derivative (PID) control loops.
• Knowledge of the principles and applications of computerized process control systems including the application of serial and Ethernet communication.
• Knowledge of Microsoft software including, Operating Systems, Domain Servers, Excel, Word, and Outlook.
• Knowledge of PC's, both hardware and software.
• Knowledge of programming software including PLC Ladder logic, OPC data exchange and Operator Interface Unit (OIU) development.
• Networking and database management.

Educational Requirements:

• Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program majoring in electrical engineering or technology.
• Junior or Senior year students preferred.
• Potential Candidates should have completed courses in Controls, Engineering Economics, etc.
