    Job Description

    Job DescriptionSalary: $210,000 - $240,000

We are seeking a Vice President of Software Engineering to spearhead the development and operation of our SaaS platform, guiding the engineering team, defining product architecture, and managing DevOps processes. This pivotal role not only demands technical leadership and a robust background in software development but also a dedication to nurturing your team's growth, promoting their contributions, and enhancing their experience at gWorks. The ideal candidate embodies strategic thinking, possesses strong leadership skills, engages hands-on with technology, and aligns with gWorks' core values of innovation, collaboration, and integrity. With a bias for action, curiosity, confidence, ambition, and humility (our "humbitious" approach), you'll drive culture, technical delivery, and strategic execution, ensuring our engineering team thrives.

As gWorks continues to scale, we require a leader who is adept at scaling both the product and the team in tandem with the company's growth. This involves a proactive, adaptive approach to evolving market demands and technological advancements. The ability to work in a fast-paced environment, skillfully plan for future developments, and execute with precision is paramount. Execution, in particular, is critical; we value leaders who can transform vision into reality, ensuring that strategic plans translate into actionable results that propel gWorks forward.

The ideal candidate has a solid foundation in software engineering management and a proven track record in developing cloud-based SaaS solutions. You will apply your skills and experience to drive our engineering organization towards best practices, creating innovative, maintainable, and high-quality products that solve our market and clients' needs. You will understand the importance of aligning software and system architecture to corporate strategy, product strategy, and revenue targets. You will be a part of our senior leadership team, translating our company's vision and strategy into a technology roadmap and leading the team that executes it.

This is an opportunity with high potential for growth to join the well-established and growing company, gWorks, whose mission is to empower every public leader to build smarter local governments and stronger communities with our simple, integrated software platform. We help 2,500 local governments across the United States impact 25 million citizens. Our product suite includes finance & accounting, operations & work management, utility billing, GIS, citizen engagement, payments, and more.

    Responsibilities:

    • Establish technology priorities based on customer needs, competitive context, and internal delivery capabilities, directing the engineering team's focus towards impactful objectives.
    • Adapt and refine engineering processes to efficiently support company scaling, implementing scalable methodologies that evolve with gWorks' growth.
    • Streamline development workflows and enhance automation to optimize software development lifecycle (SDLC) and DevOps efficiencies, ensuring faster and more reliable delivery.
    • Coordinate the SOC2 compliance initiative, ensuring all engineering practices meet the required security and privacy standards to uphold trust and compliance.
    • Support due diligence and manage the technical integration of new acquisitions, aligning technology stacks and strategies to maximize synergies and strategic goals.
    • Regularly assess and adjust team structures and processes to maintain an efficient, productive engineering organization that maximizes output and fosters a positive work culture.
    • Contribute insights on technology trends and competitive landscapes to the company's strategic planning, ensuring engineering goals align with broader business objectives.
    • Enhance the engineering team and culture to align with gWorks' values and strategic directions, developing operational leadership that fosters innovation and excellence.
    • Utilize third-party development resources effectively to increase engineering capacity and velocity while managing costs, overseeing an effective offshoring strategy.
    • Maintain proactive partnerships with cloud vendors to ensure a scalable, secure infrastructure that supports the company's growth and technological needs.
    • Work closely with Product Management to ensure engineering efforts are tightly aligned with product roadmaps and customer requirements, facilitating seamless release and roadmap planning.

    Skills and Experience:

    • 10+ years of software engineering management experience.
    • 10+ years of hands-on full-stack software development experience.
    • 5+ years managing cloud-based software solutions on AWS, Azure, or GCP
    • Possess a broad range of experience in areas such as software development, architecture, SaaS operations, cloud management, data analytics, AI/ML, systems integration, monitoring, and troubleshooting
    • Deep understanding of security principles ranging from secure development practices to threat detection and response
    • Experience leading remote teams
    • Ability to work under tight deadlines and adapt in a rapidly growing environment.
    • Proficiency in project management using Agile methodologies.

    Success Metrics:

    • Execution of the technology roadmap on time and within budget.
    • Improvement in product quality and customer satisfaction.
    • Efficient management of the engineering team and resources.
    • Achievement of strategic objectives aligned with business goals.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent. Master's degree preferred.
    • 5+ years of experience in SaaS development and operations.
    • 3+ years of experience working at the executive level.
