POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under limited supervision, the Research Nurse 2 will coordinate, implement, evaluate and execute all aspects of clinical research functions of the NICHD Neonatal Research Network (NRN) in collaboration with the research team. This is a part-time position working 20 hours per week.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. In collaboration with the principal investigator and other NRN Investigators, provide direction in the development, design, organization and implementation of clinical research protocols for the NICHD NRN. (10%)
2. Maintain annual IRB continuing reviews for current study protocols. Maintain annual re-certifications. (11%)
3. Identify and evaluate prospective study patients. Initiate and maintain positive relationships with potential and current study patients. Develop and provide information to educate parent(s) and families of prospective study patients (newborns). Obtain informed consent from parent(s) for study participation. Complete certifications necessary for Protection of Human Subjects and as required in the Department of Occupational and Environmental Safety. Develop and conduct patient and family education. (36%)
4. Supervise and assist in developing data collection systems for all on-going study protocols. Coordinate the collection of data and study specimens (blood, other body fluids) needed for study protocols. Ensure proper handling of specimens for storage and shipping to outside central laboratory for analysis. (29%)
5. Serve as member of sub-committee(s) to develop and maintain study protocols for the NICHD NRN. Communicate directly with NICHD as needed to ensure proper execution of all NRN protocols. Preparation and submission of NRN protocols for Institutional Review Board (IRB). Compose consent forms as needed for each protocol. Submit study protocol reports and correspondence from the NICHD and Data Safety and Monitoring Committee to IRB as received. (7%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Assist principal investigator with maintenance of grant budget. Assist in writing research grants, publications and study materials. May oversee financial accounts to ensure operations remain within budget. (1%)
2. Serve as resource to medical, nursing and other ancillary staff for all NRN study policies, procedures and guidelines, educating when needed. Collaborate with other NRN site research staff (RNs and data entry coordinator) and other ancillary staff as needed for individual protocols. Coordinate with other intra-hospital disciplines as needed to execute study protocols. Coordinate study drug randomization with research pharmacist per protocols as needed. (5%)
3. Respond to data queries and requests from Data Coordinating Center. Perform other duties as assigned. (1%)

CONTACTS

Department: Regular contact with principal investigator and research staff regarding issues or concerns.

Hospital: Regular contact with IRB and Clinical Research Center staff, NICU nurses, NICU respiratory therapists, as well as faculty, fellows and residents caring for study participants.

University: Regular contact with department administrators regarding workflow, supplies and information.

External: Regular contact with collaborators at other institutions.

Students: Infrequent to no contact with students.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Provide direction and may supervise Research Nurse 1 or other support staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Licensing and Experience: Bachelor's degree and 3 years of experience OR Associate's degree and 7 years of experience OR High school and 11 years of experience. 5 years clinical experience in Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery preferred. RN license in State of Ohio required.

REQUIRED SKILLS

1. Knowledge and understanding of commonly-used concepts, practices and procedures within the field of Neonatal Intensive Care.
2. Ability to perform blood draws from a central line or a heel stick is helpful but not required.
3. Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills; must demonstrate the ability to effectively and professionally communicate and work with various individuals from a broad spectrum of disciplines, technical and educational backgrounds within the department, school and university and with individuals outside the university.
4. Good/Strong organization skills; ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines. Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy, time management skills and follow-through.
5. Effective management skills: ability to lead, train, work with and elicit cooperation from team members and staff.
6. Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within a team.
7. Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
8. Effective problem solving skills; must demonstrate sound judgment and good decision making.
9. Must demonstrate flexibility and ability to work under pressure; must be able and willing to work in a fast-paced, changing environment.
10. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data entry.
11. Must demonstrate willingness to learn new techniques, procedures, processes and computer programs as needed.
12. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
13. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The position will require time in an office collaborating with research staff and in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit talking to parents and clinicians. In addition, travel to NIH NRN meetings in Bethesda, MD may be needed (maximum 4 times per year). Night and weekend calls will be shared with other research nurses. This primarily is comprised of answering questions and remotely monitoring the electronic medical record. However, rarely protocols will require coming into the NICU, for instance for a time-sensitive enrollment; in these cases, a study investigator will also come in.
