    Santa Fe College's Educational Talent Search (ETS) is purposed with helping students reach their college and career goals and is designed to provide eligible high school students with the persistence skills and the motivation needed to succeed in their precollegiate studies. Working one-on-one with students, the program counselors assist students through individualized mentorship including academic support, test preparation, study skills workshops, college and career exploration, and assistance with college admissions. Serving the North Central Florida region, ETS provides assistance to 9-12 grade high school students at Baker County High School, Bradford High School, Dixie County High School, Dunnellon High School, Fort White High School, Hawthorne High School, Lake Weir High School, North Marion High School, Union County High School, and West Point High School.

    The Academic Coach for ETS is responsible for providing direct counseling, advising, instruction and assistance to low-income students and students at-risk of academic failure to encourage post-secondary enrollment at up to 4 high schools in multiple counties. Additionally, the Academic Coach is responsible for the recruitment of and provision of all services to program participants, including supplemental instruction, tutoring, personal support/counseling, financial education, academic advising, mentoring, and study skills development. As the connector to college resources, the Academic Coach must maintain relationships with high school administration, guidance staff, and teachers to coordinate program services within each high school served by the program.

    Responsibilities and Duties

  • Identifies, recruits, and provides age appropriate personal, academic, financial, and career counseling services for high school students, assisting them in overcoming barriers to postsecondary education.
  • Implements and maintains the ETS program at each designated high school, coordinating with high school administration, guidance staff, and teachers to ensure accuracy and success of the program.
  • Helps develop publicity materials for the ETS program including brochures, applications, display posters, banners, and parent packets.
  • Works with high school administration to identify eligible program participants and coordinates recruitment efforts to retain these students.
  • Assists in program planning, such as field trip schedules, workshop content, delivery of services, and evaluation planning.
  • Provides advocacy services for students and serves as a liaison between the student and guidance staff, families, and relevant college departments such as enrollment services and financial aid.
  • Coordinates and implements the schedules for high school visits for the academic year in collaboration with the high school administration, collecting student schedules and developing weekly meetings for one-on-ones with students, ensuring that it does not interfere with core classes and school/county testing dates.
  • Prepares an individual student assessment to identify the student's individual strengths and helps them create realistic and attainable goals for the upcoming year.
  • Tracks, collects, compiles, and provides data to the Director for reporting requirements and to keep internal and external stakeholders abreast of program successes and achievements.
  • Through individual, group, and online instruction, assists students in study skills development, mentoring, academic and career guidance, financial literacy, ACT preparation, college admission, scholarships, financial aid, and other individualized college admission needs.
  • Maintains multiple record-keeping documents such as sign-in sheets, time and effort logs, mileage logs school rosters, and records related to grant objectives and goals.
  • On a designated basis, schedules, organizes, and chaperones all educational or career related field trips and on a daily basis, travels to various high schools within North Central Florida.
  • Keeps accurate records of student contacts, updating as necessary, and inputs them into an online data base system.
  • Complies with all published College Rules, procedures, guidelines, and laws/regulations governing public employees, including but not limited to those related to document retention and destruction, FERPA, and confidentiality.
  • Strictly honors the privacy, security, and confidentiality of student records and other sensitive information according to appropriate state, federal, and college regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • ­Provides service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible and professional engagement.

    Qualifications

    Required: A bachelor's degree in education, psychology, social work, or a related field with two (2) years of related work experience.
    Additional Requirements: A criminal background check will be conducted. Applicants must have a valid Florida Class E Operator (driver's) license and be authorized to drive for the college.
    Preferred: A master's degree in education, psychology, counseling, social work, or a related field. Three (3) years of professional experience and demonstrated success in overcoming barriers like those of the target population or experience working with a similar population.
