    Overview

    The Pathologists' Assistant (PA) is a highly trained and certified Allied Health professional that independently provides various services within the Department of Anatomic Pathology, under the supervision of an Anatomic Pathologist. Common tasks and duties include (but are not limited to) the gross examination of routine and complex surgical specimens, submission of tissue sections, specimen triage, tissue collection for ancillary studies, postmortem examinations, medical photography, frozen section preparation, laboratory inventory, tissue storage and disposal. Administrative responsibilities are required periodically. These professional responsibilities require the PA to work independently with minimal supervision and require exceptional organizational and motor skills in addition to a strong working knowledge of human anatomy, pathophysiology and histopathology.

    Schedule: Full Time, Benefits Eligible, 10:30AM-7:00PM with rotating weekends and holiday on call.

    Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates the anatomic pathology technical skills and knowledge required for surgical, autopsy, and perinatal specimens
  • Knowledge of anatomy and dissection procedures for surgical, autopsy, and perinatal specimens.
  • Ability to perform gross descriptions for surgical, autopsy, and perinatal specimens
  • Ability to perform photography of body, organs, and pertinent items
  • Select appropriate tissues for cultures, microscopic exams and special studies
  • Autopsy prosection including external exam, in situ organ inspection, evisceration, organ dissection and dictation of the gross findings
  • Assure proper restoration of the body for acceptable release to the funeral director
  • Maintains 35 mm slide archive
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and upholds applicable laws and regulations related to position
  • Wears / uses personal protective equipment as appropriate for the work area or task performed
  • Performs quality control procedures as required and documents / notifies manager with out of control results
  • Performs and documents daily, weekly and monthly tasks where appropriate
  • Assists Manager and Chief with QA projects and monitors
  • Reviews and signs all applicable manuals on an annual basis: Safety, LIS and technical procedure manuals
  • Attends continuing education programs and meets the department requirements of 4 hours of CE per year
  • Able to review, write procedures and policies and prepare quality assurance reports according to regulatory agency standards
  • Obtains proper authorization for autopsy procedures
  • Assures proper maintenance and restoration of the autopsy suite
  • Demonstrates clerical accuracy and computer skills required in the laboratory and for administrative responsibilites
  • Verifies patient information accurately using the requisition form and specimen container
  • Accessions specimens promptly and accurately into the computer system following LIS procedures
  • Labels cassettes and slides accurately and writing is legible
  • Able to prepare materials for conferences and projects as needed by utilizing Microsoft Office products, photomicrographs & digital imaging
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate with staff, patients, parents and clients
  • Demonstrates the ability to present information in a clear, concise effective manner either oral or written
  • Ability to facilitate activities as required
  • Maintains and fosters interpersonal relationships with both internal and external customers
  • Ability to adapt and change manner of communication style to various cultural differences
  • Believes in and practices good teamwork
  • Demonstrates the ability to provide feedback that is useful and assists in individual improvement
  • Supervision and training of dieners in relation to techniques, safety policies, and updates
  • Informs laboratory personnel of pertinent changes in laboratory procedures
  • When assisting an individual provides feedback in a courteous manner that is useful and will assist individual development
  • Demonstrates the ability to make determinations regarding a course of action and alternatives
  • Recognizes and resolves problems in a timely manner, seeks out additional resources as needed, with minimal interruption to the user
  • Demonstrate the ability to adjust to change, handle interruptions, and continue to function effectively with changing circumstances
  • Can identify and correct problems with autopsy permits and documents
  • Procurement and coordination of patient's chart and other pertinent clinical data for pathologist's review for autopsy cases
  • Obtain and summarize clinical history and organize results of special studies for surgical, autopsy and perinatal specimens
  • Monitor the progress of special studies within CHI and outside the institution, investigate when necessary
  • Demonstrates the ability to plan and develop new procedures or policies and demonstrates initiative to complete assignment
  • Prioritizes and adjusts work schedule in order to accommodate projects and users requests as determined by the Chief of AP, Surgical Pathologist or AP Manager
  • Demonstrates the ability to monitor and stage the progress of a project and provide feedback to AP manager of Chief of AP
  • Demonstrates ability to set long and short term goals and deadlines when implementing a project, and to define objectives necessary to meet those goals
  • Demonstrates ability to work with and coordinate the activities of other personnel involved with the project
  • Takes personal initiative to refine procedures, investigate and suggest new procedures, troubleshoot, modify workflow when particularly busy, and discuss potential problems
  • Qualifications

    KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Ph.D. or Master's degree in biological or allied health sciences with three years anatomical experience; OR Bachelor's degree in biological or allied health sciences with five years anatomical experience. Advanced degrees preferred.
  • Must be eligible for certification with the American Association of Pathologists' Assistants for on the job trained candidates (or working toward eligibility within the minimum OJT period required for certification).
  • Effective interpersonal skills are required in interactions with departmental staff, medical and nursing staff, all levels of hospital staff, outside vendors and instrument field engineers.
  • High degree of motor control and good hand/eye coordination working with specimens.
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision;
  • Ability to teach and supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Aptitude for detail.
  • MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to stand for more than 1 hour at a time, sit for more than 1 hour at a time. Good visual and auditory acuity. Full use of hands and arms. Ability to speak clearly. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds occasionally.?Occasionally must be able to lift five gallon reagent containers onto counters; assisted lifting of larger patients for autopsy procedure.?High risk of exposure to infectious disease cases and exposure to hazardous chemicals and noxious odors.?Must be able to tolerate the required personal protective equipment.?Must be able to tolerate the emotional demands of working with deceased children.
