    Potomac State College (WVU Keyser), part of the West Virginia University system of campuses, located in Keyser, WV is seeking applications for a Campus Police Officer.

    About the Opportunity

    The primary purpose for this position is to support the University by establishing and maintaining a safe atmosphere for the faculty, staff, students, and visitors at WVU by providing police and security services.

    What you'll do:

    • Patrols assigned area on campus to observe persons and property therein for the purpose of reducing and preventing criminal activities. Checks buildings for security, being alert for situations of deficiencies that make WVU vulnerable to crime. Corrects or reports noted deficiencies. Advises public on ways to make them more secure and seeks public support for crime prevention.
    • Patrols campus during special events such as concerts, football and basketball games, and other similar activities which draw large crowds of people. Directs traffic after said events to alleviate congestion. Provides for crowd control, including subduing large numbers of intoxicated persons.
    • Enforces all Federal, State, and University laws, rules, and regulations. Enforces all campus traffic and parking regulations. Makes arrests in accordance with Departmental arrest policies. Recognizes and apprehends wanted persons, wanted automobiles, and stolen property.
    • Investigates criminal complaints and both traffic and non-traffic accidents in conjunction with the Investigative Unit by collecting and preserving evidence, interviewing witnesses and interrogating suspects, searching records, and surveillance activities.
    • Testifies in court or University hearing to knowledge of or actions taken in regard to matters of interest to the courts or University.
    • Watches for fire, fire hazards, safety hazards, and other dangerous or damaging situations. Takes appropriate action when a water leak, chemical spill, or other related hazardous condition is detected.
    • Administers first-aid to injured or sick persons and provides or arranges for necessary transportation.
    • Escorts persons making cash deposits, ensuring the safety of those individuals transporting large sums of money.
    • Assists the general public by answering inquiries, providing directions, and other similar general service activities.
    • Operates the communications dispatch unit. Operates and enters messages into the "WEAPONS" terminal (N.C.I.C.) and logs such messages properly.
    • Performs special protective assignments with particular persons or property.
    • All other duties as assigned.


    Qualifications

    • High School Diploma or GED
    • A minimum of six (6) months experience dealing with the public or an equivalent combination of education, military, or completion of a law enforcement/criminal justice program will be accepted.
    • Ability to read and write in English and perform basic mathematical calculations as would be required in the completion of technical reports and professional police operations.
    • Ability to communicate with individuals at all levels within the organization and the general public in a clear and professional manner.
    • Current knowledge of federal and state laws relating to public safety and the ability to rapidly learn University and
    • Department of Public Safety policies and procedures.
    • Ability to accurately operate a firearm (preference given for prior experience).
    • Ability to drive defensively (preference given for prior experience).
    • Ability to use a police issued baton (preference given for prior experience).
    • Must acquire and maintain a CPR certification (preference given for prior experience).
    • Knowledge of and ability to perform defensive tactics to protect self and others (preference given for prior experience).
    • Ability to react quickly in emergency situations (preference given for prior experience).
    • Ability to subdue individuals under the influence of alcohol and drugs (preference given for prior experience).
    • Physical capability to perform duties of position.
    • Current knowledge of police practices and philosophies.
    • Work is typically performed with a certified officer until Field Training Program is completed and then calls are supported by certified officers.
    Requirements
    • Selected candidate(s) must successfully complete a pre-employment psychological evaluation before official hire date.
    • Applicant must pass physical agility testing (PAT) prior to final offer. PAT standards are as follows:
      • Sit-ups: 28 in one minute
      • Push-ups: 18 in one minute
      • Mile and half run: 14 minutes and 36 seconds
    • Following hire, must qualify for, attend, and complete West Virginia Basic Law Enforcement Academy within one year. The academy requires the applicant to pass a physical examination and be within a certain height and weight range.
    • Preference maybe given to already certified candidates.
    • Must be bondable upon background check.
    • Must be able to maintain law enforcement officer certification.
    • Must have and maintain a valid Driver's License.
