Under the general supervision of the Mental Health Program Manager; the specialized mental health agent will serve as the first line of supervision for a caseload consisting primarily of individuals who are living with a mental illness. Maintain a professional communication network with internal and external stakeholders, advocate on behalf of those supervised to seek/maintain stability. Maintain effective knowledge of all areas of mental health supervision, programs, policies and protocols. Participate in trainings and maintain all requirements for Mental Health Certification.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
A bachelor's degree with at least 15 semester hours in social or behavioral science courses; An associate's degree and two (2) years of military or certified law enforcement experience (to include Class 1 or Offender Supervision Specialist experience) may be substituted; or a high school diploma and four (4) years of military or certified law enforcement experience (to include Class 1 or Offender Supervision Specialist experience) may be substituted.
Preferred Qualifications
In addition to meeting the minimum requirements, applicants will be required to obtain C-1 law enforcement certification by the SC Criminal Justice Academy within 1 year of employment (12 weeks which includes an 8 week sequestration at the academy).

Must be willing to use your personal vehicle to make on-site visits (mileage reimbursement paid by state)
Must possess a valid current South Carolina Driver's License
Must reside within the assigned county within which you work. Must receive approval from chain of command if choosing to live outside your assigned county.
Must have a driving record clear of suspension(s) during the past 5 years as a result of driving under the influence of alcoholic beverages or dangerous drugs, or leaving the scene of an accident.
Must have a record clear of any conviction for a criminal offense that carried a sentence of one year or more or of any criminal offense that involves domestic violence or moral turpitude (forfeiture of a bond, a guilty pleas, or a plea of nolo contendere is considered the equivalent of a conviction)

Must be willing to undergo a thorough background investigation to include a credit check and reference check
Must be willing to undergo a physical exam at your own expense should you be selected for a position
Willing to be on call 24 hours a day subject to being called to assist in offender-related matters and respond to state emergencies
Willing to visit offenders' homes, some of which are in dangerous neighborhoods; willing to go into homes that are unkempt and deal with offenders who have poor personal hygiene habits
Willing to interview victims and their families regarding the release of an inmate
Willing to tolerate adverse conditions and/or abusive language (for example, catcalls, hecklers, vicious dogs)
Willing to go into state prisons and local jails to interview offenders
Willing to work independently, yet make all case decisions in accordance with Department policy and procedures
Willing to learn and apply restraint procedures in order to deal with resistant violators
Willing to complete (12) weeks of CJA training and three (3) weeks of PPP Basic training including firearms training and defensive driving
The Criminal Justice Academy requires all students that carry a chemical weapon as part of their duty equipment, be sprayed during the 12-week law enforcement class
Willing to certify in firearms training and use possible deadly force, if necessary
Willing to issue and serve warrants, arrest violators and present cases to the court that might result in an individual's incarceration
