    Description

    The Montana Historical Society seeks a detail-oriented and collegial person to work as a Review and Compliance Officer with the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). If you have the passion to preserve Montana's historical heritage and have strong skills in communication and organization, this position might be for you.     Duties include but are not limited to:

    • Protection of cultural resources per the National Historic Preservation Act and Montana State Antiquities Act. Common resources include archaeological sites, historic mining and industrial properties, rural historic properties, railroads, irrigation features, bridges, roads, and trails.
    • Review and comment on adequacy of a consulting party's identification and recordation of cultural resources.
    • Use of National Register eligibility criteria to determine a cultural resource's eligibility.
    • Issuing determinations of an undertaking's effect to a property's National Register qualities.
    • Working with property owners to modify an undertaking to avoid, minimize, or mitigate adverse impacts to significant cultural resources.
    • Working in concert with others in the office who review undertakings, nominate properties to the National Register, plan outreach events, and maintain a database of known cultural sites in Montana.

    Thorough knowledge of procedures, principles and philosophies that guide the cultural resource management field, including working knowledge of preservation laws and compliance regulations.

    Understanding of Northern Plains and Rocky Mountain archaeology and working knowledge of research, survey and inventory methods, and ethics as gained through advanced college education, practical work experience, or both.

    Experience in archaeology, applied or public history, or cultural resources management. Experience would include conducting one's own historical research, and appropriate review of another's work.

    Knowledge of the National Register and excellent written and verbal communication skills.

    Knowledge of the Section 106 review process.

    Post-graduate degree in Anthropology/Archaeology, or Cultural Resource Management plus two (2) or more years work experience (may include intern/practicum).
