    Referral Coordinator -JOB SUMMARY:

    A certified multi-skilled professional dedicated in assisting all aspects of medical practice under the direct supervision and responsibility of the office manager and physician. Understanding the importance of patient care management, administration and clinical procedures are key elements of success. Competence in the field also requires that a medical assistant adhere to ethical and legal standards of professional practice.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    1. Processes all referrals according to level of priority and organizational policy.

    2. Sustains a tracking log to ensure all referrals are processed and corresponding results

    received in accordance to priority and organizational policy.

    3. Answers telephonic or verbal inquiries on insurance matters in a prompt and courteous

    manner.

    4. Maintains the access to managed care portals for continuous organizational usage.

    5. Openly communicates on authorization issues with the Operations Manager and medical

    staff. Advises the aforementioned parties on the requirements for completing a referral in a

    manner conducive to policy and medical necessity.

    6. Data enters the progress and completion of all referrals in the practice office management

    information system).

    7. Ensures all referrals contain the necessary elements for processing with third party payers,

    which includes but not limited to specified forms, supporting diagnostic and/or consultative

    notes, signature of the physician, and corresponding procedural and diagnostic codes.

    8. Checks at least a day in advance the third party coverage, eligibility, and copayments of all

    scheduled patients and data enters any changes in POMIS as well as informing relevant

    staff and affected patients.

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

    Post high school clerical/secretarial education or any combination of related education and/or experience in which comparable knowledge can be inquired; types 45 wpm; word/data processing experience.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, write and speak in English and Spanish. Must be able to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memorandums. Agility to effectively communicate information both orally and written on one-to-one and small group situations to clients and other employees.
