    Position Description: Library Student Worker

    The Bruce Jackson Memorial Library is located on the Boston campus of GCTS. The Boston campus, also known as CUME (Center of Urban Ministry Education), focuses on ministry in urban settings and training for pastors and church leaders in a multi-ethnic environment.

    This is a 10 hour a week position with responsibilities in the GCTS Boston campus library. The library will be the primary workplace, but the position may include work elsewhere in the building as needed. Work hours will be set from Tuesday through Thursday when classes are scheduled with the occasional Saturday workday for events as needed. This position will help provide library support to students, faculty, and staff and work with library staff to meet the information needs of the CUME campus community.

    Projected Start Date: On or after June 1, 2024

    This position reports to: Library Administrative Assistant under the Campus Operations Manager.

    Qualifications:

    The ideal candidate for this position is a student currently enrolled in one of the master's degree programs at GCTS. The candidate must have some prior customer service experience. Candidates must also be able to work with a wide range of personality types, cultures, and remain calm under pressure, especially in troubleshooting situations. Candidates must be confident with technology and able to learn new technology easily. (Training will be provided). The candidate must be able to communicate clearly with others.

    Responsibilities:

    There will be times when there are multiple demands placed on the worker, and in those cases the worker will need to prioritize the importance of tasks. The supervisor will provide guidance and support for helping establish priorities.

    The student worker will perform the following tasks in the course of their work:

    The student worker will handle a variety of basic library tasks including circulation desk functions, answering the phone, shelving books and periodicals, use of electronic resources, providing library assistance as needed, monitoring and answering the BJM library email, provide basic troubleshooting and help with digital resources, and other tasks as assigned by the library staff. The worker is expected to interact well with library users, members of the seminary community, and others serving on the library staff. Training will be provided by the library staff.

    This position also involves occasional projects as needed by the library staff and the seminary community. Training will be provided with necessary equipment and technology.

    Scheduling:

    This is a 10 hour a week, part-time student worker position. Hours will be set by a supervisor generally during class times; Tuesday through Thursday with some weekend hours as needed. Candidates unable to work weekend hours should discuss this with library staff during the interview. Inability to work weekend hours is not an automatic reason for turning down applicants.
