    Description

    Summary:

    The competent Nurse, in the same or similar clinicalsetting, practices independently and demonstrates an awareness ofall relevant aspects of a situation. Provides routine and complexcare, with the ability to on long-range goals or plans. Continuesto develop the ability to cope with and manage contingencies ofclinical nursing. Makes appropriate assignments and delegates toother care providers as a means to help manage the clinicalsituation.

    The CHRISTUS Spohn SouthLabor and Delivery, Antepartum and Obstetrical EmergencyDepartments are all staffed by one group of associates that arecrossed trained in all three areas. Registered Nurses, OB SurgicalTechnicians, Certified Nurse Aides and Unit Secretaries make up ourwonderful team of associates. In addition we have 24-hour CRNAcoverage for maternity anesthesia and our OBED is staffed within-house OB Hospitalist to accept transfers, care for patients andhandle emergencies 24 hours a day. We average about 220 deliveriesper month. We are capable of providing care for our patients inneed of Non-stress test, Amniocentesis, Induction of Labor,Management of Postpartum complications such as hemorrhage orelevated blood pressure, and have the capability to begin anemergency section within 30 minutes of decision time and recognizedas a Texas Ten Step for Breastfeeding. Our department is a happyenvironment for the patient and family, and our team provides anexceptional patient experience.

    Responsibilities:


    • Meets expectations of the applicable OneCHRISTUSCompetencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader ofLeaders.

    • Consistent with the ANA Scope and Standardsof Practice, provides nursing care utilizing the nursing process,including assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention andevaluation for assigned patients.

    • Addressesincreasingly complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and socialneeds of patient and families in accordance with their level ofpractice.

    • Using the appropriate protocol, administersmedications and treatments; monitors for side-effects andeffectiveness of the treatment prescribed.

    • Documentspatient history, symptoms, medication, and care given.

    • Assess learning needs and provides education to patients, familymembers and/or care givers; identify issues and resources.

    Standard I: Utilizesthe Nursing Process

    • Uses critical thinking skills toassess the basic physical, psychosocial, social, cultural,spiritual, and development needs of patient and families

    • Implements patient care and therapeuticprocedures; monitors and documents progression of treatment andteaching goals

    • Anticipates and plans foradmission/discharge/transfer needs to facilitate patient flow

    • Utilizes appropriate systems of communication and tools tofacilitate the discharge process

    • Coaches on tools andtechniques for checking, cross checking and validating orders toensure accuracy

    Standard III. UnitOperations

    • Plans, directs, and evaluates the overallnursing care and functions in a particular nursing unit during anassigned shift

    • Demonstrates good stewardship in properuse and maintenance of equipment and Supplies

    • Assessesdepartmental staffing needs; actively participates in resourcingefforts.

    • Educates and trains others on theoperations, ethics, and regulations within the industry

    Standard IV. Safe Practice/QualityCare/Regulations

    • Incorporates patient safetypractices/guidelines to promote a safe environment resulting inpositive patient outcomes

    • Demonstrates accountabilityfor nursing research and quality improvement activities

    • Provides evidence-based nursing care

    •Communicates patient information effectively across the continuumof care

    • Educates and trains others on the operations,ethics, and regulations within the industry

    • Knowledgeof federal, state and local healthcare-related laws andregulations; ability to comply with these in healthcare practicesand activities

    TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES
    Clinical Policies and Standards

    • Follows aspecific set of standards and associated clinical procedures

    • Analyzes policy and standards documentation and ensuresorganizational compliance

    • Assists in the developmentand implementation of specific procedures

    • Works withcontrol and monitoring mechanisms, tools and techniques

    Health Information Documentation

    •Shares experiences with maintaining paper and electronic patientdocumentation

    • Walk through the steps and proceduresfor receiving, validating and updating patient records

    •Describes the flow of information between various stations orunits

    • Discusses the functions, features and documentflow of electronic documentation

    • Transcribes verbalorders; explains techniques for ensuring their accuracy

    • Explains health information documentation best practices andtheir rationale across health care practices

    Medical Equipment

    • Describes experience with basicmedical equipment used in own unit or facility

    • Usesstandard diagnostic tools and techniques to resolves commonequipment problems

    • Educates patients about theappropriate use of home medical equipment

    • Ensures thatall equipment and related supplies are in proper working orderprior to use to ensure patient safety

    • Inspects,troubleshoots and evaluates incoming equipment

    Medical Order Processing

    • Shares experiences withprocessing medical orders for one or more groups of patients orconditions

    • Describes functions and features of thesystem used to enter, validate, update and forward medicalorders

    • Discusses common errors, their sources andprocedures for correcting

    • Explains considerations forentering and following standing orders

    • Differentiatesbetween standing orders and preprinted orders and considerationsfor each

    Patient Chart Reading andInterpretation

    • Describes experiences in reading andinterpreting patient charts for patients on unit and under owncare

    • Reviews patients' charts for completion andaccuracy; identifies and alerts to mistakes or omissions

    • Recognizes unexpected readings and alerts nursing or medicalstaff

    • Relates examples of mis-readings ormisinterpretations and lessons learned

    • Reviews,discusses and validates own interpretation with others

    Patient Safety

    • Shares experienceswith ensuring safety for one or more patient groups orsettings

    • Explains key features of safety guidelinesand procedures for those groups and settings

    • Listensand responds to safety inquiries from patients and familymembers

    • Recognizes and addresses physiological andpsychological signs of problems

    • Describesconsiderations for patients who can cause to harm to self, versusharm to others

    • Utilizes appropriate systems todocument misses and near misses, participates in immediateinvestigating, analysis and reporting in real-time

    Requirements:

    Experience:

    • 1 year of experience in the related nursingspecialty preferred.
    • Perinatal RNResidency, or recently practicing in a Perinatal Setting ispreferred.

    Education:

    • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing,preferred.
    • All newly hired experienced RNsmust attend New Nurses Orientation within the first 30 days ofhire.
    • New hires are precepted by adesignated trained staff member and initial on-boardingrequirements are validated through successful completion of thedesignated organizational entry competency validation and aPerinatal Department-specific competencyvalidation.
    • Completion of all annualcompetency verification requirements.

    Licenses/Certifications/Registrations:

    • RN License in state of employment orcompact
    • BLS required
    • Current certification from NCC ElectronicFetal Monitoring (C-EFM) or one of the following AWHONN courses:Intermediate FHM, Intermediate FHM Instructor, Advanced FHMInstructor, or Instructor Trainer at time of hire for experiencednurses; within 6 months of hire for new graduates and experiencednurses new to the specialty then required to maintain coursecertification thereafter.
    • CurrentACLS certification within 30 days of hire for experienced nurses;within 90 days of hire for new graduates then required to maintaincertification thereafter.
    • Current NRPcertification at time of hire for experienced nurses; within 60days for new graduates and experienced nurses new to the specialtythen required to maintain certificationthereafter.
