SummaryThe Nursing Assistant (NA) at James H.
Quillen VA Medical Center (JHQVAMC) is assigned to provide care for an adult/geriatric patient population - ranging from the critically/acutely ill patient to the chronically/terminally ill long-term patients - including mental health patients.
The incumbent's work area may be either on a ward setting and/or with patients in transit or while in other designated places.
Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Education or Training
One year above high school with courses related to the Nursing Assistant occupation
Completion of an intensive - specialized - occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a Nursing Assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3.
English Language Proficiency:
must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook Part II - Chapter - Section A - Paragraph 3j
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria)
Grade Determinations:
GS-3 No specialized experience beyond the basic requirements
GS-4 One year of specialized experience as a Nursing Assistant or experience in another medical field - performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional states - therapeutic communication - and technical skills required for basic and intermediate treatments.
- OR successful completion of 2 years above high school in an accredited institution with courses related to nursing care - health care or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the positionIn addition to the above - applicant must demonstrate the following
Knowledge - Skills and Abilities: 1 Ability to provide a range of patient/resident care and contribute to the completion of the nurse care plan and recovery of patient/residents
2 Ability to observe patients/residents physical or emotional status and refer deviations and/or problems to supervisor in a timely manner
3 Ability to properly use equipment - materials and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as bladder scan - continuous passive motion device - blood glucose monitoring machine - specimen collection etc
4 Ability to communicate effectively with patient / residents - their families and other health professionals
GS- 5One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge - skills - and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignments OR successful completion of a 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree
In addition the above - applicant must demonstrate the following
Knowledge - Skills and Abilities: 1 Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patient/resident with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital - long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse / Licensed Practical Nurse
2 Ability to communicate orally with patients/ residents - families - interdisciplinary team and other personnel
This includes serving as a preceptor to new nursing assistants by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/ assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting
3 Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance
For example:
recognizing need for basic life support - controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis - etc

James H Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center (JHQVAMC) is a major inter disciplinary teaching facility - serving medical - surgical - and neurological inpatients and outpatients
There is a large outpatient psychiatric population - with admissions for medical comorbidities
This position requires visual acuity - keen hearing - clear distinctive speech - and manual dexterity
This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking - standing - stooping - sitting - bending - pulling - lifting more than 10 pounds - and pushing
Transferring patients and objects may be required
The NA may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures
The NA may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium - dementia - or psychiatric disorders
The NA must be a mature - flexible - sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations - able to shift priorities based on patient needs
The employee may on occasion - be assigned to other Veteran care areas throughout the medical center where certain healthcare services are available 24/7.
DutiesNursing Assistant -GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNED DUTIES: The NA provides clinical and administrative support in a wide variety of patient care and related activities within Nursing Service including - but not limited to - roles assigned to Escort Services (i.e. - direct patient care - patient transport - Reusable Medical Equipment cleaning)
The NA functions as a member of the nursing care team and assists licensed nursing staff in the care of patients/residents receiving preventive - acute - sub-acute chronic - maintenance - and hospice care
The NA is able to provide patient/resident care during day - evening - and night tours of duty
This includes not only the delivery of personal care but also observing - reporting - and recording pertinent information relative to patient care in the electronic medical record
He/She/they possess the ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance
The NA can recognize the need for basic life support - control bleeding and assist with behavior crisis - etc
He/She/They perform and/or assist with diagnostic studies and performs treatments/procedures
He/She/They is responsible to assist or teach patients regarding selected treatment procedures
The NA works with maximal initiative and minimal supervision - demonstrates leadership to the nursing assistant staff - and teaches proper technique and procedure by example
He/She/They promote maximal patient motivation - independence - and rehabilitation
And provides patients with a sense of self-worth and dignity by fostering self-reliance
The NA may perform duties in a variety of healthcare settings such as outpatient - inpatient - long-term care - hospice/palliative care - acute and sub-acute under close supervision
The NA will care for patients/residents with acute to chronic conditions
He/She/They must have demonstrated knowledge and ability to provide a full range of nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems

When setting pay - a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade)

Child Care Subsidy:
