    River Valley Holdings is a family-owned distribution company based in Syracuse, NY, serving retail customers across the northeastern United States. The River Valley family of companies: River Valley Foods, Cavallaro Foods and Garden Spot Foods, distributes a wide range of specialty dry and frozen grocery items and consumable products out of warehouses in Syracuse, NY and New Holland, PA.

    The Controller will play a critical role in overseeing the financial operations of our organization. They will be responsible for managing accounting functions, financial reporting, budgeting, and internal control policies. The Controller will possess a strong understanding of accounting principles, excellent leadership skills, and the ability to provide strategic financial guidance to senior management. This position will report to the Vice President of Operations and Technology.

    Work Schedule: Monday – Friday/ 8:00am – 5:00pm (on-site)

    Salary Range: $120K - $150K

    Position Overview and Responsibilities:

    • Financial reporting
      1. Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
      2. Ensure accuracy and compliance with accounting standards and regulations
      3. Present financial reports to senior management, highlighting key insights and trends
    • Budgeting and Forecasting
      1. Develop annual budgets in collaboration with department leads
      2. Monitor budget performance and provide variance analysis
      3. Forecast financial trends and outcomes to support decision making
    • Accounting Operations
      1. Oversee day-to-day accounting activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger
      2. Ensure timely and accurate processing of financial transactions that supports robust departmental and account profitability reporting
      3. Drive process improvements and automation initiatives to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability of financial operations and reporting
      4. Implement and maintain accounting policies and procedures to safeguard assets and maintain financial integrity
      5. Manage relationships with external stakeholders, including auditors, tax advisors, banking partners and financial institutions
    • Financial Analysis and Strategic Planning
      1. Analyze financial data to identify opportunities for cost reduction and revenue enhancement
      2. Provide strategic financial guidance to senior management to support business decisions and growth initiatives
      3. Evaluate investment opportunities and assess their financial impact on the organization
      4. Monitor and report on compliance with all bank covenants and other requirements
    • Team Leadership and Development
      1. Lead and mentor the accounting team, fostering a culture of collaboration, excellence, and continuous improvement
      2. Provide training and development opportunities to enhance the skills and knowledge of team members
    • Qualifications
      1. Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field
      2. Proven experience of 5 or more years in a senior accounting or finance role with demonstrated leadership capabilities
      3. In-depth knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting standards, and regulatory requirements
      4. Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret financial data to drive strategic decision making
      5. Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel; experience with ERP systems is a plus
      6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments
      7. Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of accuracy and integrity
      8. Ability to thrive in a fast paced environment and manage multiple priorities effectively
