    Position Summary

    Hiring Incentive will be paid out in three equal installments.

    The Traffic Technician performs a variety of manual or semi-skilled maintenance and repair tasks in City streets and traffic infrastructure maintenance.

    This is a Safety Sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

    Education, Training, Experience, Certifications, Licenses and Registrations

    Education / higher education: High School Graduate or equivalent

    Minimum number of years of directly related experience: At least six months work experience.

    Education and/or experience preferences: Prior experience in street maintenance is preferred.

    Driver's License requirement: Frequent Driver -- Regular Driver's License Required Endorsements: None

    Note -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.

    Preferred certifications, licenses or registrations: CDL

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Knowledge: Methods, materials, procedures, and standard practices of traffic hardware maintenance, sign repair, and installation; equipment and tool operation and maintenance practices; Federal (OSHA) and state regulations and City policies regarding safe work practices relating to use of power tools. Understanding how to work safely near and around traffic

    Skills: The safe operation of vehicles, equipment and tools and work in potentially hazardous areas, around moving equipment and in a variety of work areas. Must be able to use a personal computer or other computerized device to track and maintain inventory of signs or other traffic related equipment or devices.

    Abilities: Perform heavy physical exertion under adverse weather conditions; follow written and oral instructions; operate power equipment, including but not limited to, attenuator truck, and related equipment as assigned; operate hand tools; operate a motor vehicle; prepare basic written reports, including work orders and maintenance logs; establish and maintain effective, professional relations; communicate effectively with the public and other employees; operate, maintain and repair power tools and small equipment used in the work; comprehend and carry out simple verbal instructions and recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers; add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s; perform these operations using units of money, weight measurement, volume, and distance.

    Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Internal: Works with other sections within the Engineering Division and other Public Works Divisions as well as other City Departments to provide for the health, welfare and safety of the traveling public. External: Presents a friendly, courteous image for the City to the general public, customers, and public officials.

    Essential Functions

    The following functions are typical for this position. The omission of specific functions does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned.
    • To load, transport and unload construction materials, supplies and equipment to and from job sites in conformance with established procedures and protocols under the direction of the Division Supervisor.
    • Operates non-CDL required bucket truck to repair street lights and traffic signals and transport construction materials to and from the work site.
    • Transports equipment and loads and unload trucks by hand or with the use of mechanical equipment.
    • Performs minor routine or preventative maintenance and repair on assigned vehicles.
    • Operates other small equipment and vehicles and performs manual labor as necessary.
    • Performs traffic control and other related duties as assigned.
    • Performs manual and semi-skilled labor utilizing hand and machine tools and equipment to construct, repair, and/or maintain streets, signing, striping, and traffic hardware.
    • Assists in maintaining inventory of signing and striping within the City of Rio Rancho. Tracks inventory of materials and orders signs and materials as needed while tracking costs in accordance with sign budget.
    • Enter data into a tablet or other computerized device.
    • Call in utilities spots as necessary for the installation of new signs or underground electrical repairs.
    • Assists public works Utility Locator as necessary with street light, fiberoptic, and storm sewer utility locates.
    • Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment. Performs various tasks associated with street maintenance projects.
    • Performs emergency work due to weather; snow, rain, wind, etc.
    • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, or other documents.
    • Visually inspect traffic infrastructure and note repairs needed.
    • Erect traffic signs and other traffic control devices in strict accordance with State and National standards and specifications.
    • Will dig holes using post-hole digger, auger, shovel, level and other tools.
    • Climb ladders or bucket lift to install/maintain traffic control devices. Ensures sign placement, visibility, orientation and mounting heights are in accord with standards.
    • Assist Electricians with installation and maintenance of traffic lights and other traffic control devices.
    • Assist with temporary traffic control setup and takedown for traffic maintenance projects.
    • Raises signs and poles into position using truck-mounted hoist or hydraulic boom.
    • Operates air hammer to drive metal post into ground.
    • Replaces worn or damaged signs.
    • Measures, marks, and drills holes for mounting sign, using tape measure, chalk, and drill.
    • May receive mentoring and guidance from Electricians (or higher-level employees) in the same workgroup or unit to gain additional skills and knowledge in the field.
