    Position Summary:

    The Recreation Specialist will serve as team leader for direct service, recreation programming and is responsible for organizing and implementing recreational activities for all age ranges (toddlers to senior citizens), supervising children and youth, and supporting the development of Recreation Assistants. Working hours will be primarily during afterschool hours, evenings, and weekends.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    Operations Leadership

    • Mentor; provide guidance, role modeling and continuous on-the-job training for Recreation Assistants
    • Train, coach, and supervise all employees/volunteers that he/she is assigned to oversee.
    • Direct the care, maintenance, cleanliness, and asset protection of department equipment, supplies and facilities
    • Promote and role model exemplary customer service, and a person centered approach in all patron interactions
    • Prepare parent notices, newsletter submissions, etc. as needed

    Program Activities Implementation

    • Initiate, operate, and develop well-rounded recreation and positive youth development programs and activities, including those that will meet the needs of individuals not interested in athletics
    • Organize, lead, and referee individual/group activities and sports
    • Promote and stimulate program participation
    • Register and provide orientation for participants and families
    • Maintain reports including attendance records, permissions slips, etc.
    • Ensures the safety of all visitors and participants via keeping equipment and materials put away and/or posting notification of any hazards

    Other

    • Perform any other duties assigned by the Director and/or Program Manager, as requested.
    • Safely drive 15-passenger vans

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • High School Diploma or GED; Some post-secondary education preferred
    • 2 years related work/volunteer experience; 1 year must be related to positive youth development
    • Must be willing and able to work evenings, weekends and extended days as needed.
    • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)
    • Valid NM Driver's License and must have and maintain clean driving record.
    • Must not have any DUI/DWI convictions within the last five (5) years from any Tribal, State or Federal Court;
    • Must be able to pass a background check.
    • Must pass a drug/alcohol screening.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

    • Self -motivated and able to handle multiple tasks, meet deadlines and prioritize workload.
    • Able to coach and communicate effectively with the youth of the community; supervise numerous youth of all ages.
    • Must be proficient at college level in speaking, comprehending, reading and writing to fully communicate with patrons, parents/families, staff and Tribal Administration.
    • Competence to effectively present information and respond to questions from community members and Tribal Leadership.
    • Capacity to lead/instruct others in recreation/exercise/fitness activities
    • Must pass Travelers' Insurance Risk Control test within 30 days of hire
    • Current First Aid and CPR Certifications, or ability to attain certifications within 90 days of hire

    Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

    The physical requirements of this position are moderate to strenuous. The employee is regularly involved in fitness, recreation, and youth activities requiring advanced physical fitness, and required to model holistic health. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job including ability to adjust focus. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, high places, loud noises, etc. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic chemicals i.e., cleaning/paint supplies, and extreme heat or cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
