- Conduct routine analytical tests using complex instrumentation to determine chemical and physical properties of raw materials, process, and final product samples.
- Advise operating units to deviations from standard product quality.
- Troubleshoot lab and plant problems (equipment failure, process upsets, etc.).
- Assists production units in trial runs for developmental products or equipment tests.
- Assists analytical team in development and reliability of analytical methods
- Organize work efficiently to analyze unscheduled/non-routine samples.
- Generate and maintain records per lab QA ISO procedures, including regular procedure reviews / revisions
- Conduct regular audits of equipment, work area, and procedures
- Preparation of material standards and calibration of equipment
- Accurately enter data into logbooks, computer, and other documentation forms.
- Communicate vital information and requirements to oncoming shift and/or supervision.
- Analyze standards and perform routine calibration to ensure quality results.
- Ensure routine care and maintenance of sophisticated equipment.
- Assist in assembly and testing of new lab equipment.
- Coordinate contract lab testing.
- Interface with maintenance / supervision to expedite repairs
- Maintain product and raw material specification database
- Understand regulations regarding shipping, packaging, and handling of products, raw materials, and waste.
- Generate, maintain, and communicate environmental reports to corporate, state, and federal organizations.
- Monitor environmental waste streams and report results for all plant streams.
- Safety and health responsibilities:
- Participate in PPE and Ergonomics Evaluations
- Maintain Housekeeping, 5S, and Procedures in lab per EPS (Evonik Production System) Standards
- Generate, maintain, and communicate possible safety issues/concerns through safety suggestion program
- Perform Task Safety Observations and participate in Job Safety Analysis
- Take responsibility for the environmental/safety of themselves and others and have the following specific responsibilities: understand and follow site EH&S rules
- Ability to coordinate own daily work activities with other functional groups
- Understand basic scientific principles and capability to perform basic math
- Use of SAP quality module and other laboratory information management systems / databases
- Capability to operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment such as gas chromatographs, titrations, various wet chemistry procedures, particle size analyzers, viscometers, spectrophotometers, ICP, TOC analyzers, and BOD meters. Solid's testing will include LOI (loss of ignition) LOD (loss on drying), bulk density, surface area, pore volume, cam sizer, water absorption, attrition, and XRF (metal analysis)
- Must be able to contribute to root cause analysis and solve problems
- Ability to follow and audit written procedures
- Time management and organization skills to complete wastewater analyses, acetylenic, and catalyst area quality testing efficiently and effectively; while balancing calibration, audits, procedure reviews, and general housekeeping.
- Willingness to work rotating 12-hour shift and, at times, work moderate level of overtime
- Achievement of Higher Education Degree (preference will be given to candidates who have obtained 4-year college degree; ideally in chemistry, biology, or engineering). Experienced candidates with 2+ year associate degree and/or technical trade certification will be considered)
