    JOB SUMMARY

    Provides customer-service coverage in the Admissions Department of Uvalde Memorial Hospital, and assumes the responsibility for successful financial outcomes of all patient services. Responsible for registering all inpatients and outpatients for all services at UMH, insurance verification, telephone coverage, data entry, filing protected health information (PHI), patient referrals, appointment scheduling, and point-of-service collections. Reports to Admissions Manager. Non-Exempt position.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    • Enters patients into the patient tracking system upon arrival.
    • Interprets physician orders to determine service needs.
    • Collects and scans physician orders and verifies the order has physician signature and diagnosis printed on the order.
    • Accurately and thoroughly collects, analyzes, updates and records demographic, insurance, financial, and clinical data in the HIS. Ensures information source is appropriate.
    • Obtains information and completes Medicare Secondary Payer Questionnaire and other payer specific documents as required.
    • Reviews and explains all registration forms prior to obtaining signatures from patient or appropriate patient representative.
    • Verifies insurance eligibility and benefits and obtains pre-authorizations form third-party payers in accordance with payer requirements (when applicable)
    • Identifies patients who will need Medicare Advance Beneficiary notices of non-coverage and maintains accurate record of authorizations within the EHR
    • Determines patients out of pocket liability through various insurance protocols, co-payments, deductibles, allowances, etc.
    • Collects out-of-pocket liabilities from patients upfront and applies, adjusts, and reconciles daily point-of service-cash reports.
    • Performs pre-registration of assigned accounts.
    • Documents system with activity comments to ensure appropriate account follow-up.
    • Performs daily cashiering routines ( drawer routines, menu options, and posting payments) to include opening and balancing the drawer.
    • Refers patients to Financial Counselor when further explanation/education is needed regarding denied authorizations, out of pocket liabilities, coverage options, payment plans, etc.
    • Monitors and maintains multiple work queues as instructed and assigned.
    • Updates patient tracking systems are updated with patient activity.
    • Exhibits professionalism in appearance, speech, and conduct, and ensures that services are provided in accordance with state and federal regulations, as well as organizational standards.
    • Ensures guardianship of minor patients and validates.
    • Performs registration duties at all locations as needed.
    • Accepts all other duties as assigned
    POSITION REQUIREMENTS

    Minimum Education

    High school diploma or GED required.

    Required Skills

    Must possess superior ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Additional languages preferred.

    Excellent interpersonal skills and customer service.

    Must possess high degree of organization and be able to multi-task efficiently and effectively.

    Advanced computer knowledge required, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook.

    Ability to use standard office equipment (copier, fax, etc.).

    FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS

    Functional Job Requirements:

    Job requirements include, but are not limited to: sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, bending, squatting and reaching. Requires good finger dexterity, repetitive motions with hands and fingers. Requires ability to have good vision and hearing. Pushing and pulling equipment may be necessary.
