    CITY OF DAVIS INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

    (Engineering and Transportation)

    Commitment:

    ~10-20 hours/week, two quarters minimum, one year or more is desired.

    Candidates Sought:

    We are seeking 1-2 undergraduate/graduate students in Transportation Planning & Policy, Community Development, Civil Engineering, or other closely related fields. GIS and AutoCAD skills are highly desired.

    The city of Davis has two paid internship programs in the Public Works Engineering and Transportation Department. We are seeking applicants interested in one or both of the programs listed below. Both opportunities include a mix of fieldwork and office work. Interns will be using City vehicles and bicycles to travel to fieldwork sites and conduct surveys.

    Internship Programs

    1. Transportation Planning and Traffic Engineering:

    Our team manages transportation planning and traffic operations in the city. This includes working with the Bicycling, Transportation and Street Safety Commission and the Unitrans Advisory Committee. We also work on developing planning documents, policies, and changes to the Davis Municipal Code and run the active transportation programs. The City Traffic Engineer works on traffic concerns, traffic safety, signal timing, roadway striping plans, and capital improvement projects.

    Transportation Planning and Traffic Engineering Internship Duties
    • Develop and implement outreach programs with the Active Transportation Coordinator and the Safe Routes to School Coordinator.
    • Learn to teach bicycle education to youth and adults. Help teach the rules of the road at events and bicycle education classes.
    • Assist with the Bicycling, Transportation, and Street Safety Commission. Attend meetings on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 5:30 p.m. Take meeting minutes, assist Staff with agendas and presentations.
    • Collect data for traffic engineering assessments. Learn to use a radar detector and conduct traffic counts. Learn policies and how to analyze data.
    • Conduct ADA assessments of the bus service.
    • Learn about traffic calming tools, policies and how to work with neighborhoods with traffic calming requests. Attend meetings with residents to understand their concern and use data-driven analysis to evaluate requests.
    • Use AutoCAD to create exhibits for meetings and websites.
    • Prepare plans and exhibits for roadway striping, street standard policies, and traffic signal modifications.
    2. Capital Improvement Projects and Development:

    Our Engineering team oversees all the City capital improvement projects and development projects. This team prepares and reviews construction plans and documents, inspects projects, and prepares reports.

    Capital Improvement Projects and Development Internship Program
    • Assist the Principal Civil Engineer on projects.
    • Conduct fieldwork and use GIS tools to collect data.
    • Learn how to read and interpret construction plans and make comments.
    • Learn about development projects and capital improvement projects.
    • Learn about City standards and specifications.
    • Review encroachment permits and calculate permit fees.
    • Review construction material submittals and assist with construction activities.
