    Swisher's parent company, Island Management LLC is a large privately held company located in Duval County, FL. Island Management LLC is seeking a Tax Supervisor/Manager to work closely with the Senior Vice President of Tax in all areas of taxation. The position will be exposed to operating entities, investment vehicles, and both corporate and personal tax issues that may arise in the ongoing operations of the company's businesses. Certain aspects of the business include a small office which manages a substantial investment portfolio, and the trust holdings of certain shareholders. There is opportunity for advancement for the right person who shows the proper work ethic and leadership skills.

    The Tax Supervisor/Manager will report to Island Management's SVP of Tax. In a small office setting, this position will also have direct exposure to the CFO, COO and President. The position will be responsible for sophisticated tax compliance filings, which will call for independent research and independent decision-making skills on tax issues that arise in the normal course of business. In addition to the SVP of Tax, you will work closely with/supervise the staff tax accountants. There will also be significant interactions with the operating entities accounting teams and the office accounting teams. This will require the individual to prioritize and be a team player as issues arise. Finally, we seek an individual who will possess the ability to bring forth new approaches and processes to continue the development and growth of the department.

    Responsibilities:

    Tax Compliance

    • Maintain and complete monthly tax compliance filings per tax calendar.
    • Tax filings include federal and state income tax returns, estimated payment forms and tax accounting reposting schedules.
    • There are three major components of the business:
      • Operating Company - manufacturing company(s) (tobacco) with operations in 35 states
      • Investment Company - large sophisticated passive investment co. (equity, fixed income, alt. inv.)
      • Direct Investments - entity that manages direct investments in other operating entities. These are generally passive minority investments with some exceptions where control is maintained.
    • Analyze K-1 statements and their current tax implications.
    Audits
    • Assist VP of Tax in preparing for income tax audits.
    • Maintain detailed records from tax filings in an organized fashion in preparation for audits.
    Tax Research
    • Have familiarity with various tax research libraries. In addition to our wide reach of investments, we consistently invest in new areas, which often call for new tax issues. This position will be expected to be able to independently research current tax law. Currently utilizing BNA and CCH research software.
    Special Projects
    • Maintain tax records of the various trusts of the various shareholders.
    • Maintain entity tax workpapers on an ongoing basis.
    • This is a small office/tax department. Everyone is expected to help out in keeping the office/department running smoothly. This may involve some time spent on mundane, repetitive chores. i.e. manual mailing of estimated tax payments. (On this issue we are constantly striving to file electronically, where possible.).
    • Strive to improve compliance processes through ongoing best practices reviews.
    Computer Skills
    • Highly proficient in MS Office Suite, especially Excel and Word.
    • Familiarity with tax compliance software. We currently use CCH Access for Income Tax Compliance.
    • Familiarity with corporate and family office accounting software. The operating entities mainly use NetSuite. The family office currently uses Quick Books but will be upgrading to NetSuite in near future.
    Desired Skills and Experience:

    The ideal candidate will be a discrete, self-driven professional with exposure to all areas of taxation as well as a thorough accounting background. The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications/characteristics:
    • Bachelor's Degree required; CPA or MBA preferred.
    • 5-7+ years combined experience in corporate and individual tax compliance, research and audit issues.
    • Exposure to manufacturing and some financial services, preferred.
    • While much of the work centers on standard corporate tax issues, some family office experience or exposure to high net worth financial & accounting issues is a plus.
    • Strong ability to communicate effectively with all parties is critical.
    • Proven ability to work independently in an entrepreneurial environment.
    As noted above, this is a small office. The atmosphere is casual but professional in attitude. This position will be exposed to sensitive personal information. Discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality are prerequisites for the position.
