- Direct oversight of the prevention, treatment, care and rehabilitation for intercollegiate athletes during practice and competition
- Coordinate the pre-participation medical examination
- Oversee the budget responsibilities of inventory, purchasing and maintenance of supplies and materials
- Maintain medical and administrative records
- Coordinate medical coverage for athletic events
- Manage and maintain the athletic training rooms
- Maintain compliance with policies and procedures of Cortland, the SUNYAC Conference and the NCAA related to medical care for student-athletes
- Ensure effective communication with athletes, coaches, medical professionals and university college departments
- The athletic trainer will possibly serve as a preceptor
- Work under the supervision of the Director of Athletics in conjunction with the athletic training staff that are assigned to the Kinesiology Department. All athletic training personnel will follow the recommendations outlined in the most current edition of the NCAA Sport Science Institute's Athletic Health Care Administration Best Practices
- Master's or Bachelor's degree in athletic training from an accredited institution.
- Certification by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification (NATABOC).
- Minimum of one year athletic training experience at the intercollegiate level.
- Previous administrative responsibilities in athletic training.
- New York State license as a certified athletic trainer, or eligible.
- CPR/AED Certification.
- For candidates holding a Bachelor's degree in athletic training, a Master's degree in Physical Education, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or a related field from an accredited institution.
- Three years' experience as a certified athletic trainer in an intercollegiate athletics program.
- Previous experience as a preceptor within a CAATE accredited program.
- CPR First Aid Instructor Certification.
- Knowledge of a large range of medical issues/problems.
- Strong assessment and evaluation skills.
- Ability to collaborate with other healthcare professionals.
- Ability to think critically and make independent decisions regarding the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and return to play decisions per state licensure guidelines.
- Commitment to details regarding injury tracking and documentation.
- Ability to communicate effectively in high stress/pressure situations when talking to student-athletes, coaches, medical professionals, staff, and families.
- Ability to organize, prioritize and perform multiple tasks with little or no supervision.
- Ability to travel with athletic teams to away contests as necessary.
- Ability to work during the day as well as non-traditional hours in the evening, on weekends and on holidays, as necessary.

The State University of New York at Cortland, a NCAA Division III institution and member of the State University of New York Conference, seeks a highly motivated professional for the position of Head Athletic Trainer to effectively manage athletic training services for the athletic department's 25 athletic programs.
Determines, with advice from a doctor, when and at what level an athlete can return to participation in a sport.
