    General Definition of Work

    The benefits administrator, under moderate supervision, performs complex work with limited decision-making discretion coordinating employee benefits and benefit administration. Employee performs administrative/support work to carry out Board of Education policies and procedures related to employee benefits under the direction of the Benefits Manager.

    Place of Work

    The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.

    Essential Functions

    • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
    • Administer and coordinate retirement, disability, and leave benefits for employees
    • Conduct new employee payroll/benefits orientations as often as needed to ensure employees are established in payroll and enrolled in insurance plans timely with accurate billing and proof of coverage
    • Facilitate the annual enrollment process for insurance and cafeteria plans
    • Maintain up to date benefits material in and on multiple platforms for employees
    • Maintain a variety of employee records for reference and audits
    • Assist employees with filing supplemental short-term disability claims completing necessary forms and monitoring status
    • Prepare/create various reports using carrier software, spreadsheets, as needed/required
    • Coordinate and process leave, disability, or retirement paperwork
    • Coordinate short-term and long-term disability leaves as well as workers' compensation leave in conjunction with FMLA and Workplace Accommodations
    • Collaborate and resolve insurance benefit concerns along with reporting and reconciliation problems
    • Assist beneficiaries with death claims; complete necessary forms and monitor status
    • Complete local, state, or federal surveys and reports accurately and promptly
    • Ensure that all Human Resources systems are fair, equitable, and adhere to state, federal, and local laws, and school board policies
    • Participate in professional development workshops and leadership training
    • Create an inclusive environment with positive communication/public relations
    • Perform related work as assigned or required
    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
    • Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements applicable to school systems
    • Thorough knowledge of county and school board policies, procedures, and standards regarding school systems
    • Knowledge of required records preparation and maintenance
    • Knowledge of state statutes, federal laws/rules, policies, and regulations regarding employee benefits
    • Ability to use computer-based financial/human resource management software packages
    • Ability to use database search and retrieval both through query functions and typical web-based reporting in order to answer questions or to detect errors
    • Ability to read, revise, and propose board policies as needed
    • Ability to maintain professional and emotional control under stress
    • Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment or software related to business needs
    • Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily business operations
    • Ability to communicate effectively
    • Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships
    • Ability to employ positive communication skills in all settings/mediums
    • Ability to problem-solve utilizing sound judgment

    Education and Experience
    • High school diploma or equivalent required
    • Associate Degree or minimum of three (3) years' experience in related job preferred
    • Bachelor's Degree preferred
    • Equivalent combination of experience and education
    Special Requirements
    • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license or ability to provide own transportation
    • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
