    Position Overview


    Primary Function of Organizational Unit


    Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) supports the University and Division by providing an array of preventative educational, physical and mental health services.


    Inclusive and student centered in our approach, SHCS adapts to the changing needs of the campus community through innovation, technology and excellence.

    Student Health and Counseling Services is responsible for providing primary health care to the student campus community in a professional, competent caring, and confidential manner.


    SHCS is committed to:
    providing reasonably comprehensive ambulatory medical services to all eligible students; promoting disease prevention through health education; providing non- classroom health education on issues that impact the student both physically and psychologically; provide counseling services with referrals to other psychological professionals when necessary; provide ancillary support services (i.e. laboratory, pharmacy, and administrative); providing advisory, collaborative, and educational assistance to other university departments; and ensuring staff competency to support and fulfill this mission. The goals are to maintain quality of care, client satisfaction, affordability, accessibility, and suitability for operational effectiveness.


    Primary Purpose of Position
    This position will provide assistance to the professional nursing staff in routine care tasks

    to clients (i

    vital signs, dressing, changes, and assisting with patient care procedures).

    Responsible for cleaning and stocking exam rooms on a routine basis. They must perform laboratory procedures under the direct supervision of the Medical Laboratory Technician. Duties include venous draws, Urinalysis, Occult blood testing, Raid Strep A testing and urine pregnancy test. Also responsible for inventory control (i

    ordering and restocking lab supplies); must also provide clerical support to the Medical Clinic. Duties include retrieving student medical records, making referrals for students, sending out letters for the medical providers; and calling students directly, setting up appointment times for medical providers and outside referrals


    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Working knowledge in the use of computers and fax machines; communication skills is important since duties require relating to students as well as medical professional staff; ability to perform basic patient care under minimum supervision of the professional nurse; ability to perform basic laboratory procedures i.e.

    urine testing, vena punctures, and urine pregnancy testing; knowledge of infection control, blood born pathogen; and, knowledge of Medical Terminology and Laboratory processing


    Minimum Education/Experience
    Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

    Necessary Special Qualification Requirements - Some positions may require registration as a Nurse Aide by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, or certification through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).

    Duties

    This position will provide support to the professional nursing staff. Individual will be responsible for cleaning and stocking exam rooms on a routine basis.
