    Job Description

    Position: Speech Language Pathologist Assistant FT or PT

    FLSA Status: Exempt

    Reports to: Exceptional Children's Director

    Purpose: Utilizing leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, school-based speech-language pathologists provide prevention, assessment, and remediation services for students who exhibit difficulties in the areas of language, speech, voice, and fluency. These services are designed to help children meet their educational goals. The SLPA will work under a licensed speech-language pathologist and will be actively involved in helping speech-language pathologists treat students for various communication and language disorders.

    Major Duties and Responsibilities:
    1. Organizes a program that addresses local school speech-language goals.
    2. Works cooperatively with school personnel to accomplish the goals and objectives of the local education agency.
    3. Coordinates speech-language services with student services provided by other school personnel.
    4. Maintains records of the speech-language program and prepares periodic reports as required.
    5. Adheres to established rules, regulations, laws and appropriate ethical standards.
    6. Conducts speech, language and hearing screenings.
    7. Administers formal and informal (ongoing & curriculum-based) assessments.
    8. Obtains additional diagnostic information from appropriate persons and available records for speech-language purposes.
    9. Analyzes and interprets information to make recommendations regarding the need for speech-language services.
    10. Provides appropriate information on an informal or formal basis regarding speech, language and hearing programs.
    11. Supervises undergraduate interns, paraprofessionals, volunteers and other professionals (as appropriate).
    12. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of North Carolina Standard Course of Study in management of communicative disorders.
    13. Collaborates/consults with classroom teachers in the management of speech-language disorders.
    14. Plans evidence-based interventions appropriate for individual students and groups of students.
    15. Uses evidence-based methods and techniques appropriate to stated objectives.
    16. Manages the facilities, materials and equipment, including assistive technology, necessary to the delivery of services.
    17. Adjusts intervention strategies based upon student performance.
    18. Promotes effective interpersonal relations with students.
    19. Completes procedural documentation appropriately.
    20. Demonstrates knowledge and use of statewide testing procedures.
    21. Abides by professional code of ethics.
    22. Develops appropriate IEPs based on students' strengths & needs.
    23. Demonstrates awareness of professional performance in due process matters and litigious environments.
    24. Manages time efficiently.
    25. Engages in continuing education and professional growth activities related to speech-language-hearing and education.
    26. Provides consultation to parents, teachers and other appropriate school personnel.
    27. Seeks the assistance of teachers, parents and others to meet the communication needs of students.
    28. Consults/communicates with non-school agencies to enhance services.
    29. Makes recommendations and referrals for audiological/medical and related services.
    Additional Expectations:

    3. Knowledge of office practices and procedures.
    4. Knowledge of mathematical aptitude.
    5. Knowledge of business letter writing and memos.
    6. Knowledge of planning principles.
    7. Skills in operating a computer with word processing, spreadsheet and desktop publishing applications.
    8. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
    9. Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships with others.
    10. Ability to compile and summarize information.
    11. Ability to resolve problem situations with sound judgment.
    12. Ability to demonstrate proper telephone etiquette.
    13. Ability to maintain confidentiality in matters relating to the school system.
    14. Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments.
    15. Ability to compose correspondence independently.
    16. Ability to work in the absence of supervision.
    17. SLPA license Required

    Desired Training and Hands-On Experience
    Master's Degree in Speech Language Pathology or Communication Sciences.
    1. Clinical Certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
    2. Professional License from the NC Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
    3. Minimum five years experience as a Speech-Language Pathologist in a public school setting.
    4. Preferred experience in two other areas of practice such as private setting, clinical setting, or medical setting such as a nursing home, home health, or hospital.
    5. Experience working with children.
    Minimum Qualifications or Standards required to perform essential job functions:

    Physical Requirements: Position requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects.

    Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. This includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to parents, students, and staff.

    Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form.

    Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow written and oral instructions. You must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in Standard English.

    Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.

    Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. You must be adaptable top performing under minimal to moderate levels of stress.

    Assessment: Performance of this job will be assessed annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on assessment of administrative personnel.

    Terms of Employment: Salary and work year as established by the Board.
