    I. JOB SUMMARY

    The RN Administrative Supervisor is a management position responsible for directing, coordinating and providing high quality care to patients.

    The RN Administrative Supervisor oversees the implementation of systems for evaluation of clinical competencies, policy and procedures and performance improvement.

    He/she is also responsible for appropriate patient admissions based on admitting criteria developed and approved by the medical staff and administration at Los Alamitos Medical Center.

    This position supervises all areas and staff on one shift. Acts as a liaison between administration, medical and hospital staff. In the absence of administrative staff, the Supervisor has been delegated the accountability to make administrative decisions.

    • Makes patient rounds on all units and acts as a catalyst to staff in developing and maintaing quality patient care
    • Follows up on patient, employee, and MD complaints and intervens as appropriate.
    • Uses a collaborative approach to resolve issues
    • Identifies and participates in Process Improvement Programs. Incorporates core measures into rounding, with a focus on Urinary Tract Infection, Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia, Acute Myocardial Infarction, Heart Failure, Pneumonia, Stroke and Influenza and Pneumococcal immunizations
    • Coordinates the continued flow of patients through the facilit to reduce ED diversion times. Assist in the coordination of support services such as laboratory, radiology and transportation to maintain timely patient disposition
    • Assists in screening the ISD-InterQual Criteria for patient admissions using the Generic Screening Tool, and in collaboration with the Charge Nurses, assigns patients for appropriate room placement
    • Informs the Case Manager of pending admissions in a timely manner to facilitate completion of initial review of ISD-InterQual Criteria within established corporate time frames
    • Schedules nursing staff for 24 hours coverage in accordance with staffing guidelines and labor standards. Includes planning for the provision of meal and break relief on units as required.
    • Maintains the work schedule and plans for staffing needs: Makes adjustments and reassigns personnel among various units. Utilizes hospital staff for replacement for staffing needs before utilizing registry staff. Secures additional help from per diem staff or outside registries when needed. Adjusts staffing as census, acuity, and competencies require
    • Records changes in staffing such as floats, call offs, and flexing in Optilink StaffRunner in a timely manner to facilitate unit assignments in Optilink PCSS
    • Assist the Charge Nurses to make daily patient assignments as requested: The Supervisor shall make independent scheduling decisions taking into consideration each employee's skills, ability, competency, experience and expertise given such factors as census, patient acuity, complexity of treatment and the language needs of patients. In the event of a staffing shortage or emergency, the Supervisor shall cover the shortfall by reassigning personnel. In the event that unit staffing is more than adequate to meet existing needs the Supervisor shall have the authority to allow employees to leave early.
    • Ensures staff and agency compliance with policies, procedures, regulatory and legal requirements, including but not limited to the dress code, noise levels, and the code of conduct, which includes sleeping or giving the appearance of sleeping on duty
    • Assesses the level of competency of nursing service personnel and collaborates with the Directors and CNO for intervention
    • Assists in the evaluation of employees and independently evaluates employee job performance as it relates to specific job functions patient care issues, communication skills, appearance, responsiveness and customer service skills
    • Responsible for maintaining unit productivity hours within budget
    • Assists in maintaining staff records, i.e., licensure, certifications and nursing competencies, including direct source verification
    • Actively participates in and promotes cost containment programs
    • In the absence of the pharmacist, secures patient medication from the night locker or Pyxis
    • Responsible for assuring that necessary supplies and equipment are available, including making arrangements for obtaining and returning equipment from a rental agency as needed
    • Reports to oncoming RN Administrative Supervisor and completes the shift report including staffing on units, variances in staffing with justification, administrative issues, and patient issues at the end of each shift.
    • Immediately reports any unusual incidents to the appropriate Director/Administrator
    35 Functions as a liaison between nursing staff, patients, families, visitors, other departments, physicians, and administration


    • Appropriately identifies and assesses emergency situations and intervenes as appropriate. This is to include response to all emergency codes, acting as the recorder in Code Blue situations, and facilitating transfers to a higher level of care as required
    • Informs Pathology of a pending autopsy as necessary. Gives support and assistance to the deceased's family as required
    • Utilizes community resources for patient assistance and works with Discharge Planning and Social Services for continuity of care
    • Acts as a secondary First Responder
    • Schedules future surgeries in the absence of OR personnel. Calls in on-call personnel for emergency surgery
    • Pronounces patients' death in accordance with policy and is able to handle coroner's cases and organ/tissue harvesting when necessary
    42 Ensures eSRM and employee incident reports are completed and routed for appropriate follow up.


    • Resolves problems or complaints among unit employees that arise during the shift concerning scheduling, assignments, breaks, and meal periods, or other conflicts that may arise between unit employees. The Supervisor shall also resolve complaints regarding employees from patients, patients' families, and physicians.
    • Receives grievances from represented employees and forwards them to the CNO for resolution
    • Following discussion with the department Director, utilizes human resources tools to perform employee counselling in response to violations of hospital rules and policies, or in situations involving patient care issues
    46 Performs other duties as assigned.

    IV. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE


    MANDATORY:
    a. Current Registered Nurse License in the State of California

    b. American Heart Association BLS and ACLS

    c. Healthy Interventions training or equivalent within three months of hire and annually thereafter

    d. Ability to use computer and a variety of software applications

    e. A minimum of two years clinical experience in acute hospital nursing

    f. Supervisory or charge experience


    PREFERRED:
    a. A Bachelor of Science, Master of Science or related degree

    V. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    Must be able to sit, stand, and/or walk for long periods of time

    Must be able to withstand long and occasionally erratic working hours Must have dexterity, coordination, visual and auditory acuity
