    Position Summary:

    HVAC Service Technician I

    The HVAC Service Technician I position is responsible for completing the installation, maintenance, and repair of refrigeration and air conditioning systems and related air handling equipment. This position will be filled at the entry level and will be provided on-the-job training. The minimum qualifications for the HVAC Technician I are six months of experience in refrigeration-air/conditioning repair work or education in a related field.

    The duties and responsibilities consist of the following:

    This is semi-skilled and skilled mechanical and electrical work performing the installation, maintenance and repair of refrigeration and air conditioning systems and related air handling equipment.

    Assists highly skilled Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Service Technician Seniors in the maintenance of large tonnage, complex, or multi-system refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.

    Installs, repairs, maintains refrigeration, air conditioning, and air handling equipment. Assists in the installation and repair of large tonnage, reciprocating, absorption and centrifugal A/C units. This requires the knowledge of the refrigeration cycle, refrigerants and of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment of smaller tonnage; and the ability to install, adjust, maintain and repair smaller refrigeration and air conditioning units.; ability top solder and braze; and the ability to understand and carry out general oral and written instructions. Work is reviewed for conformity to industry standards by the supervisor as needed.

    Repairs and maintains A/C units by inspecting, dismantling units for cleaning, repair and replacing switches, relays, fan motors, and thermostats; replaces filters; lubricates fan motor and adjusts controls; checks for worn belts, noisy bearing, clogged air lines and refrigerant leaks. This requires the knowledge of the standard practices, methods, and tools used in installing, operating, maintaining and repairing refrigeration and air conditioning equipment of small tonnage; knowledge of principles and practices of electricity and circuitry as applied to smaller refrigeration and air conditioning units and their controls; ability to analyze equipment malfunctions and reach sound conclusions as to cause of problem; ability to use and care for tools and measuring and testing equipment common to the trade.

    Provides skill necessary to assist in changing filters, washing towers, collecting water samples and performs chemical analysis of condenser and closed systems for the purpose of determining suitable water quality. Analysis is performed to prescribed procedures as defined by the supervisor and manufacturer's instructions. Work is reviewed for results achieved as needed by the supervisor.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Six months of experience in refrigeration-air/conditioning repair work. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency. Requires a valid driver's license. Must be able to perform strenuous physical labor such as lifting. Must be able to climb ladders and work on scaffolding.
