    Description


    Provide strategic leadership and oversight for the creation of visitor experiences within the Science Museum of Minnesota (SMM) and the broader museum community.

    The Director of Exhibit Project Management is a creative problem solver, expert communicator, and proven leader whose primary role is to provide leadership and vision in project management.

    The Director of Exhibit Project Management inspires, leads, and supervises Project Leaders and Managers.

    The Director is an expert in customer service and helps support the Exhibit Product and Sales function of the Exhibits Division.

    The Director of Exhibit Project Management contracts with outside talent when appropriate and functions as an Exhibit Project Manager for exhibit projects.

    The Director of Exhibit Project Management, in collaboration with the VP of Museum Experiences and the Director of Design and Creative Services is responsible for project planning and coordination of new exhibit gallery projects and architectural modifications within SMM's newly launched capital campaign.


    Job Responsibilities:

    Team Management


    Direct project teams and the project management work group to plan and develop effective visitor experiences for the Science Museum of Minnesota and external clients.

    Lead, train, mentor, and supervise Project Managers, and other project team members.

    Support and encourage staff to engage in all aspects of the creation process in the division and in activities across the museum.

    Develop and implement professional development plans for all staff.


    Develop and manage department resources while providing oversight and coordination of budgets managed by other cost center managers as related to experience development tasks.

    Lead and support the onboarding,development & training, engagement & recognition, performance management and offboarding of team members.


    Project Management


    Work with Senior Director of Traveling Exhibits and Exhibit Sales, Senior Director of Exhibits, Senior Director of Visitor Relations, Director of Visitor Services,and Director of Design and Creative Services to support project success - including hiring and managing contractors, establishing and scheduling milestones, timely reviews, completion dates, final implementation, installation and troubleshooting.


    Facilitate communication between project team members, other museum staff, advisors, external clients and partners, and contractors to ensure that products created meet the project's vision and goals.

    Manage conflict resolution and decision making processes to ensure that the projects stay on track and move forward.

    Provide leadership, collaboration, and assistance with visitor experience offerings as part of cross divisional work groups.

    Maintain project management tools.

    Serve as Project Manager when appropriate.


    External relationships

    Work with the Senior Director of Exhibits,, Director of Design and Creative Services., Senior Director of Traveling Exhibits and Exhibit Sales, and VP of Museum Experiences to support

    the Exhibit Products and Services sales operation by providing expertise and planning capacity as needed.


    Develop and maintain partnerships with other organizations, communities, and individuals to augment the resources and perspectives of the museum and represent the SMM to external partners and direct project teams to meet the needs of clients.

    Prepare updates and present at meetings with internal and external stakeholders including board members.


    Planning


    Establish long-range goals and strategies through collaboration with internal and external constituents to guide work for the creation of exceptional learning opportunities for visitors.


    Develop systems to manage, track, and document the delivery of facilitated learning experiences across multiple cost centers, programs, and projects.

    Participate in museum-wide and Museum Experience Division planning efforts.


    Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Education:
    No formal education necessary.


    Experience:

    -5+ years of experience managing teams charged with creating products or experiences for museum (or like) audiences.

    • Proven ability to provide inspiration and leadership.
    • Advanced skills in developing collaborations and partnerships.
    • Experience with project management and conflict resolution.
    • Demonstrable knowledge of project management principles and proven staff management ability.
    • Curiosity towards the scientific endeavor desired.

    Work Environment:
    Occasional travel off-site and out of town to project meetings.

    The starting salary range for this role is $102,640 - $119,747
