- Prepare animals for surgery by administering pre-anesthetics, placing IVs, intubating, clipping, and scrubbing animals
- Act as the operating room nurse and surgical assistant
- Provide post-operative monitoring and care
- Set up and break down surgical facilities, including cleaning and disinfecting the surgical suite and sterilizing instruments
- Handle anesthetic emergencies and perform CPR
- Perform endotracheal intubation on various species
- Maintain clinical and surgical equipment
- Operate specialized equipment for procedures such as mechanical ventilators, x-ray machines, and syringe pumps
- Assist in research protocols, including maintaining animals under anesthesia for studies like MRIs and PET scans
- Administer medications via different routes and obtain diagnostic samples
- Perform health maintenance tasks for various animal species
- Train investigators, fellows, and staff in technical procedures and animal care
- Provide guidance on anesthesia dosage and administration for different species
- Manage veterinary supplies and drugs
- Keep track of controlled substances and order supplies and equipment
- Conduct examinations on animals in quarantine and supervise movements to housing areas
