    Job Summary:
    Geisinger's Cancer Institute is seeking a qualified candidate for their System Director of Medical Physics opportunity, based at Geisinger Medical Center (GMC) in Danville, PA.

    The System Director of Physics shall have overall clinical, administrative, operational and academic responsibility for managing staff medical physicists and medical dosimetrists across the System.

    The System Director of Physics is expected to be thoroughly familiar with all daily, monthly and annual clinical duties and responsibilities of a staff clinical medical physicist.

    The System Director of Physics shall serve in the capacity of System Director of Physics and Director of Clinical Physics in the absence of the Director of Clinical Physics.

    Job Duties:
    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Development of a System Physics Strategy that:
    • Provides the leadership necessary to maintain consistent, safe, high-quality and exceptional patient-centered services requiring progressive, technologically advanced procedures.
    • Cultivates teamwork amongst staff physicists and dosimetrists across the System and advances a shared service model that promotes peer-to-peer review, efficient resource allocation, and best practice sharing.
    • Facilitates active engagement and communication with department staff via formal meetings and informal interactions; this includes all quality rounds and patient discussion conferences.
    • Promotes development through education, performance evaluation, and identification of goals.
    • Advances collaboration with each department operations manager to maintain billing processes for physics services and bills for services rendered.
    Leadership in Collaboration with the Director of Clinical Physics:
    • Serves as department liaison with outside constituents and as an active participant in assigned management forums. Interfaces with other System departments to maintain proper integration of Radiation Oncology within the broader health system workflow (e.g. Clinical Trials, Information Technology, etc).
    • Promotes collaboration amongst radiation oncologists, medical physicists, medical dosimetrists, IT specialists, department administrator, and operations managers to enhance strategic and operational alignment across the System to improve performance, efficiency and standardization.
    • Oversees the technical direction of physics and dosimetry staff within the System: reviews and pioneers novel special techniques, new procedure and protocol implementation, and robust technical support for the range of advanced radiation oncology services including, but not limited to, IMRT, VMAT, SRS, SBRT, IGRT, and Brachytherapy.
    • Participates in the development and implementation of strategic, tactical, and business plans, marketing, and public relations plans (i.e. budgets, facilities and capital analyses, market analyses, growth plans, operational contingency plans, information systems).
    • Develops and maintains, in collaboration with the medical director and physicians, clinical guidelines, protocols, policies, procedures, processes, and quality metrics, as well as methods to measure and communicate best practices throughout the System.
    • Assesses the use of current equipment, evaluates new radiation oncology technology, and participates in its selection and replacement.
    • Manages physics resources to ensure the efficient and effective provision of calibration and maintenance of therapy units, radiation source(s), and other relevant major equipment to sustain efficient and accurate operation across the System.
    • Manages physics resources to ensure proper records and correspondence pertaining to quality control and quality assurance, calibration, radiation safety and compliance with State and Federal regulations and standards of accrediting bodies.
    • Ensures all staff medical physicists and staff medical dosimetrists participate in the training, education and mentoring of medical physics residents.
    • Provides staff medical physicists and staff medical dosimetrists with opportunities, time, and resources to attend and/or present at local, national and international professional meetings.
    • Assures transparency for all quality assurance processes and reports.
    • Serves as a mentor to staff medical physicists.
    • Reviews and revises the clinical quality management program (QMP), and quality assurance policies and procedures.
    Radiation Safety and Continuous Quality Improvement
    • Serves as a member of the Radiation Safety Committees and is active in safety and quality improvement committee meetings.
    • Participates in development and assists with administration of a radiation safety program as required by the Radiation Safety Officer including compliance with all regulating and certifying agencies (e.g., NRC, JCAHO, OSHA, and appropriate state and local agencies).
    • Participates in Radiation Oncology clinical chart rounds and other patient discussion conferences.
    • Facilitates appropriate individual and staff performance recognition in an effort to maintain a positive and motivational work environment.

    • •Chairs the monthly physics, dosimetry and operations (ops) meetings.
    Education, Training, Mentorship and Professional Development:
    • Assesses staff and facilitates skill(s) development by allocation of time and resources as needed.

    • •Provides opportunities for staff medical physicists and staff medical dosimetrists to receive adequate training to perform assigned duties.

    • •Coordinates technical in-services and continuing education to the Radiation Oncology staff.

    • •Performs annual evaluations of staff physicist performance.
    Personnel Recruitment and Retention:
    • Serves as the point-of-contact for assigned Human Resources (HR) consultant on recruitment activities to ensure appropriate medical physicist and medical dosimetrist staffing levels and mix.
    • Handles all employee relations activities (i.e. coaching, counseling, etc).
    • Actively participates in resolving employee problems and conflicts as needed.
    Position Details:

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • 4 years of leadership experience in a complex, multi-site healthcare organization
    • 4 years of medical health physics experience
    • 3 years of experience as Radiation Safety Officer or Associate Radiation Safety Officer
    • 3 years of experience as Laser Safety Officer or Associate Laser Safety Officer
    Education:
    Doctoral Degree-Medical Physics (Required)

    Experience:
    Minimum of 7 years-Related work experience (Required), Minimum of 5 years-Managerial/Supervisory (Required)
