CENTRAL SERVICE TECHNICIAN I:
JOB SUMMARY:
The Central Service Technician (CST) I is responsible for receiving, cleaning, decontaminating, assembling and disinfecting and/or sterilizing reusable medical and surgical devices for safe and effective patient care for various hospital and clinic departments. The CST I must process and distribute instruments, patient care equipment and other medical devices in an accurate, timely and dependable manner to enhance the quality of patient care. The CST I is knowledgeable and adheres to regulations, standards and recommended practices for the Sterile Processing department.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Cleans and processes instruments to comply with Marshfield Clinic Health System (MCHS) guidelines, policies, and procedures based on department protocol.
2. Utilizes guidelines and policies for the safe handling and transportation of contaminated instruments and equipment from various departments to ensure guidelines policies and procedures are met.
3. Maintains sterilization records to ensure standard guidelines and policies are met.
4. Distributes sterilized items to designated departments to ensure items are available as needed.
5. Differentiates decontamination and sterilization methods for special equipment and instruments necessary for procedures to ensure standards are maintained.
6. Develops procedures and improvement skills in the Sterile Processing Dept. and in the organization of work to improve Sterile Processing Dept. methods.
7. Regular attendance is required to carry out the position's essential functions.
8. Reviews and meets ongoing competency requirements of the role to maintain the skills, knowledge, and abilities to perform, within scope, role specific functions.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
Minimum Required: High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred/Optional: None
EXPERIENCE
Minimum Required: None
Preferred/Optional: Sterile Processing Dept. experience.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
Minimum Required:
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within three months of hire.
Preferred/Optional: Currently enrolled in/attending/completed an accredited HSPA (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association) or CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution) sterile processing technician program. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA).
Central Service Tech II
JOB SUMMARY
The Central Service Technician (CST) II is responsible for receiving, cleaning, decontaminating, assembling and disinfecting and/or sterilizing reusable medical and surgical devices for safe and effective patient care for various hospital and clinic departments. The CST II must process and distribute instruments, patient care equipment and other medical devices in an accurate, timely and dependable manner to enhance the quality of patient care. The CST II is knowledgeable and adheres to regulations, standards and recommended practices for the Sterile Processing department. The Central Service Technician II serves as a Sterile Processing subject matter resource, assisting with training and education, quality and infection control and process and product maintenance, tracking, recording, and improvements.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

5. Develops methods of cost containment to ensure cost efficient methods are implemented for various departments.
6. Differentiates decontamination and sterilization methods for special equipment and instruments necessary for procedures to ensure standards are maintained.
7. Establishes, maintains and updates instrument sets and preference cards.
8. Investigates, locates and resolves malfunctions to retain existing state of standards.
9. Develops procedures and improvement skills in the Sterile Processing area and in the organization of work to improve Central Service methods.
10. Provides in-service education to staff on various processes regarding handling and containing contaminated instruments to ensure staff follows appropriate guidelines and safety measures.
11. Regular attendance is required in order to carry out the essential functions of the position.
12. Reviews and meets ongoing competency requirements of the role to maintain the skills, knowledge and abilities to perform, within scope, role specific functions.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
Minimum Required:
Certification from Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) as a Certified Registered Central Sterile Technician (CRCST) or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) sterile processing technician program or equivalent military training. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA).
