    Description
    Position Description:

    Utilizing leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, the MS CCS Counselor will promote student success, provide preventative services, and respond to student needs, specifically the needs of students who are transitioning into high school. They will support in implementing a workforce skill development program that includes a robust list of internship partnerships that students can utilize to gain necessary experience for college and their future careers. This is a twelve month position.

    Reports to:

    MS Director, with support from the HS Director of College and Career Success

    Qualifications:

    • Masters degree in teaching, counseling or related field preferred
    • School Counseling Certification preferred
    • At least 2 years of experience in teaching, career development, youth development and/or social services
    • Rigorous approach to problem-solving - collecting all relevant information, consulting diverse perspectives, and creating feedback systems
    • A self-learner, able to identify areas for growth and commitment
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
    • Passion for creating a school community that supports the development and achievement of all students, particularly those underserved and at risk in other school settings

    Duties & Responsibilities:

    MS Academic Counseling & Transitional Guidance:

    • Assist with academic preparation, life skills and requisite support of transitioning MS student to the high school
    • Support students set short- and long-term educational goals, including preparation for high school and post-secondary education.
    • Coordinate at least one major event and other smaller events in which the 8th graders are experiencing IALs High School and understand what HS is like.
    • Ensure that all 8th grade students understand the requirements needed for HS graduation
    • Plan and host staff, student & parent workshops for MS parents about various topics such as HS readiness, HS graduation requirements, and other topics as needed
    • Foster connections between the 8th grade and 9th grade teachers to share necessary information about students
    • Coordinates at least one college site visit for each grade level to orient students with the college experience
    • Partner with the school administration, teachers, parents and students to coordinate student class schedules, ensuring that course selections align with academic goals and passing requirements.
    • Track and evaluate students' academic performance and progress, providing interventions and support where necessary.
    • Maintain accurate and confidential records of students academic plans, progress reports, and counseling sessions.
    College and Career Success Counseling:
    • Assist students in understanding educational and career opportunities and requirements; help them develop academic and career plans.
    • Has a caseload of at-risk students based on Tier 3 Academic Counseling - including individual counseling and group counseling as needed
    • Communicates with families of Tier 3 students regularly to communicate plans for credit/course recovery including summer school
    • Creates advisory lessons for college and career preparation
    • Hosts 2 - 4 whole school meetings to discuss college and career readiness
    • Sits in on grade level team meetings to support students by providing data teams need to be successful
    Partnership Management:
    • Oversee, support, and/or lead Peer Group Connections to foster a supportive peer community, enhance student relationships, and promote leadership skills among students.
    • Manages communication with all Middle School Partnerships including, but not limited to Project Morry and Eugene Lang
    • Increase the number of partnerships that currently exist in the Middle School
    • Ensure that all students who want to participate in programs have the tools they need in order to apply to these programs including reviewing
    • Implement and promote workshops and activities that enhance study skills, test-taking strategies, and time management abilities among students
    School Culture:
    • Assist in building a school culture that evidences high expectations for courtesy, respect, compassion and an intellectually engaged environment for both students and adults
    • Ensure a safe, supportive and productive environment for students, staff and families
    • Model effective counseling practices in staff meetings, professional development sessions and team meetings
    • Engage with parents to discuss their child's needs and progress and to provide guidance on how to support their child's education and development.
    • Cultivate strong partnerships with community organizations and regional and national partners
    Additional Responsibilities:
    • Assist with the coordination of student arrival, dismissal, and transitions between classes to ensure a safe and orderly environment.
    • Attend all Middle School Student Support Team (SST) meetings and periodically High School SST meetings to ensure continuity of student support across grade levels.
    • Attend all College and Career Success (CCS) Team meetings to align strategies and share best practices for student success.
