    This leader's work will accelerate and improve the division's safety and emergency management capabilities through innovation and collaboration. You will plan, coordinate, implement, and monitor numerous multi-faceted projects and programs within the division.

    This is an opportunity to work with staff, management, and the Department of Natural Resources and Parks (DNRP) to influence the decisions that are made within the division.

    This leadership position performs a variety of management, planning, and coordination duties associated with safety compliance, injury prevention, and emergency preparedness programs across the division.

    Making this vision a reality is hard work and the Safety and Emergency Manager contribute by ensuring intentional approaches are used daily to ensure safety in all aspects of our service delivery.

    Additionally, this leadership position will ensure the organization is prepared to respond effectively in the face of emergencies.

    The Safety and Emergency Manager will lead a team that works very closely with the site-based operations team as well as remote based staff to assess risks, develop and implement policies, provide training, monitor performance, and achieve continuous improvement towards established goals.

    The SWD Director's office includes our Deputy Director, Administrative Support Staff, and Government Relations and Community Engagement team, and Equity and Social Justice team.

    This position performs work remotely and onsite.

    Resources are harvested on-site, and refuse is transported by SWD to the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill in Maple Valley, Washington.

    This position reports to the Division Director and leads the Safety & Emergency Management Unit (SEMU), which was established in 2020 to develop an amplified focus on enterprise-wide safety and emergency management.

    Work collaboratively across the division to establish a culture of safety and preparedness.

    Lead a division-wide assessment of our safety and emergency planning readiness, identify gaps, and implement prioritized countermeasures to achieve established goals.

    Develop an organizational plan for the safety and emergency management team. Staff and manage the team.

    Lead the development of division-wide plans including safety and continuity of operations, hazardous materials handling, debris management, and emergency response.

    Develop program area metrics, oversee safety audits, and deliver training programs to reinforce clarity of expectations towards established goals.

    A passion for safety and emergency management and at least eight (8) years of related work experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the job or the equivalent combination of knowledge and experience that will provide the necessary skills to perform the duties described above.

    At least three (3) years of work experience as a supervisor.
    Expertise in safety rules and regulations in the solid waste industry or equivalent industry.
    Knowledge and experience in the field of industrial hygiene.
    Knowledge and experience in creating and managing safety performance metrics.
    Knowledge and experience planning and leading incident command protocols for emergency response.
    Excellent oral and written communication skills including training skills.
    Demonstrated ability to present complex information to a variety of audiences ranging from front-line employees to senior leadership.
    Certified Safety Professional (Board of Certified Safety Professionals CSP) or an equivalent
    Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
    Associate or Certified Emergency Manager
    Ability to apply excellent customer service skills both orally and in writing, including the ability to provide professional and courteous service
    Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 including Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, Teams, PowerPoint, and OneDrive

    This position will primarily work remotely. There will be an expectation to travel to various worksites throughout King County as needed for your work.


    Work Schedule:
    This full-time position works a 40-hour work week. This position is exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not overtime eligible.

    The workweek is normally Monday through Friday, however, due to the 24/7 nature of the division's operations, this position will be required to occasionally support emergency response during evenings and weekends.
