- Works under the supervision of a speech-language pathologist
- Self-identify as a SLPA to students, staff, families, and others
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local regulations regarding FERPA, state licensing statutes and rules for scope of practice
- Administer or score screenings for clinical interpretation by the SLP
- Assist the SLP during assessment of students
- Implements a variety of service delivery models as documented on the IEP
- Provides direct therapy services to address IEP goals developed the the supervising SLP and IEP team
- Provide consultation and coaching to facilitate varryover of skills
- Establish and maintain appropriate data collection and progress reports
- Share objective information (accuracy in communication skills, participation in therapy sessions, response to therapy) regarding the student in IEP meetings
- Program augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices
- Provide training and technical assistance to students and IEP team members.
- Develop low-tech AAC materials for students.
- Completion of an SLPA program from a regionally accredited institution (e.g., an associate degree, a technical training program, a certificate program) OR Bachelor's degree in communication sciences and disorders
- Completion of a supervised clinical experience that consists of a minimum of one hundred (100) hours under the direct supervision of an ASHA certified SLP.
- Achieve a passing score on the ASHA Assistants Certification Exam (C-SLPA)

POSITION TITLE: Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA)
DEPARTMENT: Special Services
REPORTS TO: Site Administrator
Job Goal:
Under the supervision of a speech-language pathologist, the SLPA will implement therapeutic activities through various service delivery models for students with disabilities. Provide consultation to general education teachers, special education teachers, support staff, and related service providers regarding language interventions and strategies to improve functional communication. Function as a team member on the Individualized Education Program (IEP).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Coordinator of Special
Education/Site Administrator in accordance with the provisions of the Board's
policies and state law.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
None
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily, representing appropriate knowledge, skill, and ability in speech-language pathology. Reasonable accommodations may be provided to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.
An SLPA must complete an approved course of academic study, complete a supervised clinical experience, successfully pass the ASHA Assistants Certification Exam, and meet credentialing requirements for the state in which they practice as outlined below.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively interpret and present information, as well as respond to questions from groups, staff, parents, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to plan budgets and use the mathematical skills required to do so. Maintain accurate records and support documentation for projects under the supervision of the position.
REASONABLE ABILITY:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to use computer and computer related programs and other technologies needed to perform essential job functions. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community. Ability to organize and chair or facilitate committees and meetings. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
