    Description

    The Certified Aircraft Maintenance Technician - Level 1 is responsible for performing the duties of a FAA certificated Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic.

    Tests, trouble shoots, removes, installs, aligns, and adjusts the oil, fuel, hydraulic, pneumatic, power plant, and electrical systems of aircraft.

    Inspects, installs, replaces, and repairs airframes, engines, propellers, appliances and other components as necessary. Troubleshoots, checks, and repairs aircraft system(s) through connecting, adjusting, and operating test equipment. Conducts ground functional tests of aircraft, aircraft systems, aircraft engines, avionics, and installed accessories. Traces and corrects electrical problems in various aircraft systems.

    Performs all phases of aircraft structural repair and alteration; including sheet metal structure, wood structure, steel tubing structure, and composite structure.


    Incumbent must be able to communicate effectively and possess a high level of work, systems and aviation infrastructure related knowledge and technical skill.

    Must be familiar with Aircraft maintenance publications; Code of Federal Regulation Title 14 (FAR's), aircraft manufacturer maintenance documents, airworthiness directives, advisory circulars, orders, bulletins, forms, and aircraft records.


    Duties may include but are not limited to:

    • Performs maintenance, functional checks, and preventive maintenance on assigned aircraft. Conducts checks on hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, power systems, etc. Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and performs unscheduled maintenance on assigned aircraft. Performs repair of aircraft systems, assemblies, and surfaces. Removes components and assemblies, repairs or replaces defective parts and components and reassembles repaired items into the aircraft. Installs, aligns, and makes needed adjustments to major components and assemblies such as engines, propellers, hydraulic systems, etc.
    • Making required aircraft maintenance record entries, only for work performed, as required by FAR Part(s) 43.5, 43.9.
    • Maintain maintenance standards and procedures which are safe and acceptable to the FAA Administrator and UAA.
    • Maintain professional currency regarding FAR updates/changes, Maintenance procedures & techniques, Advisory Circulars (AC's) guidance, Aircraft manufacturers guidance and Aviation industry developments.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
    (1) Knowledge of

    * hydraulic
    * lubrication requirements
    * electronic and electrical
    * reciprocating power plants
    * brake and related systems
    * steering
    * avionics
    * current safety practices, repair techniques and terminology

    • FAA regulations, air worthiness directives and aircraft type certification
    * scope and detail of FAR 43 appendix D
    * scope and detail of manufacturer inspection check list
    * aircraft instrumentation
    * air systems
    * vacuum and pressure systems
    * landing gear (skis, floats, wheels)
    * propellers
    * airframe, including sheet metal repair, paint and refinishing materials and process
    * de-icing equipment and procedures
    * sheet metal layout and fabrication
    * types of corrosion and corrosion control methods

    • Non Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques
    * functions and limitations of equipment systems
    * technical advances in equipment systems
    * technical manuals and service handbooks

    (2) Skill in

    * forming and riveting sheet metal
    * making fine adjustments (e.g., timing, synchronization, and control settings)
    * make decisions and set and balance priorities
    * diagnosis of equipment failure and proper repair
    * use of precision tools and diagnostic equipment
    * adapt and modify procedures, operations or processes required to complete the work
    * work in absence of available or applicable guidelines
    * ensure adherence to work schedules, quality standards, safety and security rules
    * maintaining clean and safe work and tool area / work in an efficient manner
    * the vocabulary needed to read and interpret technical manuals and regulations

    (3) Ability to

    * inspect and perform basic cutting and welding
    * select and operate and repair equipment
    * select and order appropriate parts and materials
    * attend and pass factory authorized schools on specific systems, equipment or aircraft and apply acquired training to specific problems
    * post updates to technical manuals
    * recognize problems or potential problems
    * read and create schematics and diagrams
    * design and build modifications for existing systems
    * incorporate modifications into existing systems
    * make repairs to propeller assemblies
    * prioritize inspection steps
    * properly lay out, cut, shape, and fasten sheet metal to airframe
    * select and properly operate diagnostic equipment
    * describe in written format, modifications performed
    * prioritize order of diagnostic steps
    * retrieve information from computer files or shop manuals
    * retrieve, read and apply O.S.H.A. guidelines
    * retrieve, read and apply information from technical manuals, computers and microfiche
    * calibrate, maintain, and repair shop tools and equipment
    * use lubrication equipment
    * communicate effectively
    * perform work accurately, safely, thoroughly and efficiently


    Preferred Experience & Education:
    14 CFR Part 141 experience preferred.

    12 months experience maintaining aircraft operated under 14 CFR Part 91 and/or 141 preferred.

    Meet the recent maintenance experience requirements of 14 CFR Part 65.83.

    Certificate in Aviation Maintenance from 14 CFR Part 147 school preferred.


    Required Experience & Education:
    Possess a valid FAA Mechanic certificate with Airframe and Powerplant ratings.


    Salary Information:
    This is a part-time, temporary staff position. New hires will be placed on the UA temporary salary schedule, Grade 78.
