    JOB SUMMARY

    A Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) is a primary health care provider to women of all ages throughout the lifespan (Wyo. Stat. Ann.

    § CNMs focus on gynecologic and family planning services as well as preconception, pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum and newborn care and parent education.

    The CNM provides primary care, such as conducting annual exams, writing prescriptions, and offering basic nutrition counseling. The CNM promotes normal birth, attends births and detects complications in the mother and child.

    The CNM accesses the medical expertise of physicians and other appropriate assistance for situations and emergency measures that are outside the CNM's scope of practice.

    Communication, critical thinking, and social perceptiveness are essential skills needed by the CNM in the provision of safe, high quality holistic health care to every mother, newborn and family entrusted in CNM's care.


    As an advanced practice nurse, the CNM strictly adheres to the rules, regulations, scope of practice and nursing practice standards as determined by the Wyoming State Board of Nursing and the Wyoming Midwifery Board.

    In the State of Wyoming the CNM has full independent practice authority (Wyoming Board of Nursing Rules §3-2), and thus it does not require the supervision of a physician when caring for patients in the clinic/outpatient setting.

    In the State of Wyoming, the CNM is authorized to prescribe prescription drugs and Schedules II - V controlled substances (Wyo. Stat. § a)(i)(A)).


    As a member of the provider team at the MHSC, the CNM is subject to peer review and all pertinent rules, regulations and bylaws of the medical staff.

    JOB QUALIFICATIONS

    REQUIRED EDUCATION - Certified nurse-midwives are registered nurses who have graduated from a nurse-midwifery education program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME) (formerly the American College of Nurse-Midwives [ACNM] Division of Accreditation [DOA]) and have passed a national certification examination to receive the professional designation of certified nurse-midwife.

    Current active licensure to practice as an advanced practice nurse-midwife in the State of Wyoming.

    REQUIRED JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS -Applicants for initial appointment must be able to demonstrate current competence and evidence of the performance of at least 15 deliveries, reflective of the scope of privileges requested in the past 12 months or completion of an accredited nurse midwifery program in the past 12 months.
