    Position Summary
    The Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering ( CSEE ) at University at Buffalo (UB) invites candidates to apply for a position of Professor of Empire Innovation, at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor. The selected candidate will receive support through the SUNY Empire Innovation Program ( EIP ) which recognizes exceptional scholars with proven track records of externally funded research.

    We invite prominent leaders working in the areas of resilient infrastructure, in pursuit of innovations in the built environment in response to natural and man-made hazards, impacts of climate change, increasing encroachment of communities into areas prone to hazards, and aging infrastructure systems. Examples of the relevant civil infrastructure include buildings, transportation, energy, water, and wastewater, as well as coastal and inland flood protection. We particularly encourage candidates whose scholarship engages system-level analysis, multi-system interdependencies, and risk and reliability analysis of complex systems.

    The Professor of Empire Innovation will complement one or more areas of Departmental strengths in extreme events (e.g., earthquake, wind, fire), structural/bridge/geotechnical engineering, materials, transportation systems, environmental/water-resources engineering, and environmental sustainability. CSEE faculty are encouraged to participate in cross-disciplinary collaborations and engage with ongoing initiatives such as the Structural Engineering and Earthquake Simulation Laboratory ( SEESL ), the Center for Computational Research ( CCR ), the Center for Climate and Geological Hazards, the Institute for Bridget Engineering ( IBE ), the Stephen Still Institute for Sustainable Transportation and Logistics ( SSISTL ), and the Institute for Research and Education in eNergy, Environment, and Water ( RENEW ).

    The Professor of Empire Innovation will develop innovative courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels, mentor graduate students, and maintain an active externally funded research program.     About the Department
    The CSEE Department offers BS degrees in civil engineering and environmental engineering, both accredited by the Accreditation Commission of ABET . At the graduate level, CSEE offers MS/PhD degrees in civil engineering, MS/PhD degrees in environmental and water resources engineering, an MS program in engineering sustainability, and an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Bridge Engineering.

    The Department currently comprises 34 tenure-track faculty, 4 teaching faculty, approximately 500 undergraduate majors, 90 masters' students and 60 doctoral students. We are currently recruiting up to three additional faculty members (in addition to this position) during the academic year CSEE scholars routinely engage in collaborations with colleagues from diverse academic disciplines and participate in numerous cross-disciplinary research centers. Teaching faculty work also closely with colleagues from the Department of Engineering Education.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • Candidates must hold a doctorate in civil engineering, structural engineering, environmental engineering, or a closely related field.
    • Candidates must demonstrate excellence in research, teaching, service, and mentoring.
    • Candidates should be internationally recognized scholars as evidenced by impactful publications and a sustained externally funded research program.
    Preferred Qualifications
    Licensure as a registered Professional Engineer (PE).
