    Summary:

    Under direction of the System Director of Anesthesia & Surgical Services, the Surgical Services Business Manager RN position collaborates with perioperative leadership in the development and implementation of cost reduction strategies, and process improvements. Promotes and facilitates the development, and implementation of standardized key performance indicators that minimize variation and inefficiencies related to surgical services. Develops reports and data resources to support strategic plan initiatives within the department. Responsible for financial and data analysis in budget preparation, monitoring of resource utilization, and identification and prioritization of capital needs. Oversees and directs OR Scheduling and OR Purchasing. Effectively communicates with surgeons, administrators, finance and clinical staff.

    The Surgical Services Business Manager RN position is responsible for serving as a clinical and business resource in addition to unit expert for staff. This position links nursing leadership with nursing care through the application of organizational and nursing service policies, procedures, and care delivery model.

    The Surgical Services Business Manager RN uses the Code of Ethics for nurses with interpretive statements to guide leadership and practice.

    The Surgical Services Business Manager RN attains knowledge and competence reflective of current nursing practice; promotes innovation and futuristic thinking by incorporating evidence based practice and research findings.

    Responsibilities:

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    (25%)* Extracts and analyzes data to generate essential reports to enable Surgical Services performance to be evaluated. Validates extracted data for System submission for Certificate Of Need (CON) for all affiliates. Provide additional reports as requested.

    (25%) * Serves as a liaison between finance and the perioperative leadership team to enhance operations.

    (15%)* Actively participates with surgical services leadership team to identify and prioritize key initiatives and special projects along with key performance indicators.

    (15%)* Supports surgical services leadership in developing operating and capital budgets including specific project review and operational improvement plans.

    (10%)* Maintains the scheduling and purchasing staff schedule and granting of time off requests (ex. PTO, funeral, etc.) accurately. Checks payroll system for completeness and accuracy.

    (10%)*Works with the System Director of Surgical Services and OR Manager to develop and support service line initiatives.

    OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Supports surgical services leadership to improve Operating Room efficiencies including increased productivity, maximization of revenue, improving charge accuracy, and reducing cost and waste.

    Responsible for reporting data and analysis of OR productivity, along with financial overviews.

    Oversees RN staff that monitors and coordinates medical device and bone/tissue tracking, as well as incoming products and instrumentation needed for procedures, ensuring items meet all necessary FDA and other regulatory guidelines.

    Manages scheduling and purchasing office staff related to hiring, discipline, termination and performance evaluations of staff.

    Follows up with capital requests and dissemination of recall information.

    Previews OR schedule in advance.

    Functions as Co-chair of SPOC committee as well as participates in SPGC meetings.

    Provides additional data analysis support as requested.

    Works with the OR education coordinator for orientation, staff development, and promotes professional growth and development through effective leadership. Performs coaching and counseling of employees within the area in collaboration with the OR manager according to the Medical Center policy.

    Coordinates and communicates with other departments for all outpatient procedures and am admits that impacts the operating room schedule. Collaborates with physicians, all levels of nursing management, surgical services staff, and other departmental personnel in planning for coordinated services to the patient.

    Assures compliance with the regulatory agencies standards such as The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare Services (CMS), the Michigan Department of Public Health (MDPH), American Association of Medical Instruments (AAMI), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN), and International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM).

    Coordinates data management throughout the Surgical Services Department by working with the OR Specialty Coordinators, OR Purchasing office, Materials Management, Physician Offices, Ancillary Departments and affiliates.

    Investigates and resolves issues within the EMR application along with charge issues related to accounts.

    Is responsible for maintaining lines of communication with peers, subordinates, and superiors within the designated area, nursing service and other departments within the Medical Center.

    Certifications and Licensures:

    BLS - Basic Life Support required within three months of hire or transfer.

    NSC - Nursing Specialty Certification preferred within three years of hire or transfer.

    RN - Registered Nurse required.

    Required Education:

    Bachelor's degree in nursing required. Business background preferred.

    Other Information:

    EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:

    Knowledge of nursing practices and procedures as normally acquired through 3 years' experience working in a Medical Center or similar setting.

    Knowledge of nursing leadership as normally acquired through working 1 year in a Medical Center or similar setting with involvement in supervision, charge nurse, project implementation, professional development program, shared governance leadership role, or equivalent.

    Two years of computer system network experience required.

    Knowledge of day to day activities in the operating room.

    Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.

    Demonstrated strong leadership, organizational skills, and ability to set priorities.

    PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

    Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.

    Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

    Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

    Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

    Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

    Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

    Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

    Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

    Physical Demand Level: Sedentary. Must be able to occasionally (0 33% of the workday) lift or carry 0-10 lbs.
