    Orange Coast College (OCC) seeks equity-minded individuals for a tenure-track Instructor, Journalism commencing with the 2024 fall semester. The primary teaching assignment involves teaching college-level courses in journalism including, but not limited to, introduction to news writing, newspaper production, multi-platform journalism, and photojournalism. In addition, this assignment includes serving as the faculty advisor to the student-produced newspaper created in various print and digital formats. This assignment includes curriculum and program development; participation in department, division, and college committees; participatory governance activities; collaboration across disciplines; the leveraging of student support resources; and participation in ongoing professional development. The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online, or off-campus and is subject to change as needed. The ideal candidate for this position embraces the overall mission of Orange Coast College and the Coast Community College District, with a clear, focused commitment to supporting teaching and academic excellence, and student learning and success through the work of Journalism.     The Journalism department at Orange Coast College offers a range of courses designed to guide students from the basics of news writing and reporting to understanding the depth and scope of news gathering in the 21st century. With professional journalists making up a significant portion of our faculty, students receive personal and hands-on experience in all aspects of journalistic writing. The department provides invaluable journalistic training in journalism through our award-winning weekly newspaper and website. Students who graduate from our program will be ready for leadership positions in university newspapers and magazines, as well as, entry-level positions in the professional workplace.

    Examples of Duties
    Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Provide instruction in Journalism under established course outlines.
  • Serve as faculty advisor for the college's student-produced newspaper, in its various print and digital formats
  • Provide leadership in the development and revision of the Journalism curriculum.
  • Participate in curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation; participate in and develop programs to measure student performance.
  • Maintain current knowledge in the subject matter areas.
  • Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
  • Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full-time faculty member including, but not limited to the following: teach all scheduled classes unless excused under provisions of Board Policy; follow the department course outlines; keep accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and progress; submit student grades according to established deadlines; post and maintain scheduled office hours; participate in departmental meetings and college and/or district-wide activities and committees as assigned.
  • The assignment may include day, evening, weekend, and online sections.


  • Qualifications and Physical Demands

    Must meet one of the following qualifications under (1) through (4) and demonstrated evidence of D.E.I.A. (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility):

  • Valid California Community College instructor credential, appropriate to the subject, per Education Code issued before July 1, 1990); OR
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in journalism or communication with a specialization in journalism; OR
  • Bachelor's degree in either of the above AND a Master's degree in English, history, communication, literature, composition, comparative literature, any social science, business, business administration, marketing, graphics, or photography from an accredited institution;
  • Or, possess a combination of education and experience that is at least equivalent to the above. Candidates making an application based on equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required materials.   • Demonstrated evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.

  • Desirable Qualifications
  • A minimum of three (3) years of recent experience teaching journalism at the post-secondary level.
  • Experience working in print and online journalism.
  • Experience in a student-produced newspaper/magazine production including all aspects of the process, from content development, management, layout, formatting through publication and managing accounts and associated costs.
  • Evidence of an ability to address the instructional needs of a diverse and frequently underprepared student population.
  • Evidence of an ability to recruit and engage students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, interests, skill sets and experience in journalism production courses.
  • Evidence of an ability to self-reflect and respond to an evidence-based assessment of student learning.
  • Desire and demonstrated ability to participate actively in the department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of Coast Community College District.
  • Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.


  • Conditions of Employment

    For a full-time, two-semester, tenure track position a maximum starting range of $66,190 to $120,747 is offered, based on the salary schedule of $66,190 to $157,799. In addition, an annual stipend of $3,861 is offered for possession of an earned doctorate from an accredited institution. The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee.

  • The SELECTED CANDIDATE is required to complete the following before employment:
