    TITLE:
    Instructional Aide, General Education


    DESCRIPTION:
    Under general direction assist in preparing educational materials and perform a variety of instructional activities. Receive supervision from school administrator within a framework of standard policies and procedures.

    Receive direction from the classroom teacher; assist in the conduct of intensified learning experiences for students in assigned areas of study; tutor under the guidelines and supervision provided by the classroom teacher; perform a variety of clerical and supportive tasks for instructional personnel; make routine decisions within the established policies and procedures of the classroom and the district.

    MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

    Tutor individual, small and large groups of students to reinforce and follow up on specific learning activities, including English as a Second Language.

    Supervise individual students or small groups of students in practice activities (mathematics, spelling, computers and other programs as requested). Assist students in reviewing homework assignments and results of tests.

    Direct students into safe activities and in the development of appropriate social behavior using positive reinforcement strategies; supervises students as directed.

    Arrange for and operate audio-visual equipment, office machines and other instructional equipment. Prepare instructional and visual aids such as posters, charts and stencils. Maintain student records and files; perform related office duties including lunch count and record keeping. Score and record objective test results as requested. Maintain and distribute an inventory of textbooks, supplies and equipment. Collect and assemble resource materials; catalogs and keeps records current. Accompany classes on field trips and monitor student behavior. Attend meetings relating to curriculum content or student related problems upon request. Participate in parent conferences when requested; contact parents as requested by instructional personnel. Provide assistance to auxiliary staff with supervisor's approval; administer first aide if required. Consult with instructor on daily basis for current and future projects. Assist in maintaining an orderly and attractive learning environment. Perform other related duties as assigned. Maintain regular attendance. Ability to work cooperatively with others. Perform other related duties as assigned.


    EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

    Training and Experience:
    Any combination of training and experience, which would indicate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed herein.

    Completion of the twelfth grade or the equivalent of a high school education; one year of paid or volunteer experience working with children in an educational environment or childcare setting.

    A year of college with coursework in psychology, child growth and development or education may be substituted for the one year of experience working with children.

    Bilingual qualifications desirable but not mandatory. If required, a salary differential will be applied.


    Knowledge:
    Knowledge of elementary concepts, child growth and development and child behavior characteristics; instructional materials used at specific grade levels; curriculum content and objectives; application of curriculum and instructional objectives for children; student behavior management techniques and strategies; English usage, punctuation, spelling and grammar; basic arithmetic concepts; simple record keeping and record management


    Abilities:
    Ability to instruct and plan learning activities under the guidance of the classroom teacher; perform simple clerical tasks and operate standard office machines; communicate, understand and carry out oral and written directions; demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward children; meet requirements associated with the tasks outlined in the position description; establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties


    Physical Effort/Work Environment:
    Moderate physical effort which may include frequent standing, walking, lifting and occasional climbing or stooping; use of medium weight tools and materials; indoor/outdoor work environment


    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    A pre-placement physical examination may be required. Possession of a valid California driver's license and automobile insurance coverage that conforms to California state law. Possession of a valid First Aid Certificate. Evidence of a negative TB test every four years. Passing of a pre-employment basic skills test.


    SALARY RANGE:
    Range 18 on the Classified Unit Salary Schedule
