Job description

Position Overview
Reporting to the Associate Chief Medical Officer, the Nurse Manager for the Department of Addiction Medicine provides inspirational, hands-on leadership for 2-4 nurses per shift and a staff of 15-20 nurses onsite in our ATS center and support 3 nurses: OBAT (1), CSS (1), and residential recovery (1) in the continuum of our department. This leader maintains strong clinical presence on the floor, supports direct patient care delivery, and ensures every nurse has the tools, training, and confidence to succeed.

This Role Combines

  • Leadership & supervision
  • Clinical practice
  • Nursing education & professional development
  • Program quality and performance

Nurses who thrive in this role are clinicians who feel energized by fast-paced care environments, team-based patient management, continuous improvement, and meaningful patient relationships. This role will have an additional layer of support in the form of Charge Nurses in the ATS.

Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead a collaborative, supportive nursing culture rooted in empathy, accountability, safety, and clinical excellence.
  • Mentor and coach nurses to build confidence and capability—especially newer clinicians entering addiction medicine.
  • Oversee staffing, scheduling, and recruitment to ensure the unit is resourced and supported to deliver safe, high-quality care.
  • Perform regular performance conversations, celebrate strengths, and develop individualized professional growth plans.
  • Directly Lead and Supervise Nursing Staff: Oversee the daily activities and performance of nursing staff working in ATS. Provide mentorship, guidance, and support to nursing personnel in the delivery of care to patients with substance use disorders. Provides oversight to nurse staff in ATS, CSS, Askia and OBAT.

Clinical Impact

  • Provide direct patient care as needed (clinical assessments, medication administration, monitoring detox protocols, withdrawal management).
  • Model evidence-based practices and support nurses in managing patients with co-occurring medical, psychiatric, and substance use needs.
  • Partner closely with physicians, NPs, case managers, and social services to support whole-person care and smooth handoffs.

Education & Practice Excellence

  • Develop and deliver in-service training and clinical education focused on addiction medicine, trauma-informed care, and harm-reduction approaches.
  • Lead continuous clinical learning for the nursing team to strengthen skills in med-surg needs, chronic disease management, psychiatric stabilization, and crisis intervention.
  • Support patient and family education around treatment options, recovery planning, and long-term coping strategies.

Quality, Compliance & Innovation

  • Ensure compliance with Joint Commission, DPH/BSAS, DEA, and federal/state regulations.
  • Evaluate and improve nursing workflows, safety practices, and care protocols.
  • Track patient outcomes and contribute to strategic quality-improvement initiatives across the Addiction Medicine Department.

Required
Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) with unrestricted MA license
  • Minimum 5 years of clinical experience
  • Experience in addiction medicine, med-surg, behavioral health/psychiatry, primary care, or related acute inpatient settings
  • Demonstrated experience as a nursing leader, charge nurse, preceptor, or educator

Preferred

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • CARN or CARN-S certification
  • Experience working in an inpatient detox or SUD treatment program
  • Background in adult learning, nurse development, or staff training

Skills & Attributes

  • High emotional intelligence and clinical confidence
  • Strong delegation, conflict resolution, and feedback-giving skills
  • Ability to remain grounded and compassionate in a fast-paced, sometimes unpredictable inpatient setting
  • Commitment to trauma-informed, equitable care for underserved populations

Working Conditions

  • Full-time, on-site position (37.5 hours per week)
  • Extended periods on feet; ability to lift/assist patients as needed
