- Medical Technologist performs clinical laboratory testing on blood, body fluids, and tissues in general laboratory disciplines and additional ones for which they have been trained using established laboratory procedures. Medical technologist utilizes equipment and instruments on which maintenance and quality control must be performed. Medical Technologist applies professional knowledge to determine the causes or possible significance of abnormalities and departures from the norm when test results do not conform to expectations.
- Knowledgeable in all areas of the clinical laboratory: blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology/immunology, and urinalysis
- Performs testing on blood, urine, other body fluids and tissues
- Performs and interprets quality control procedures utilizing good judgment and implements corrective action when indicated
- Integrates and relates data generated from a variety of sources while making decisions regarding possible discrepancies
- Performs preventative and corrective maintenance on equipment and instruments
- Adheres to CLIA and TJC Regulatory guidelines when performing tasks
- Maintains competency for all testing performed by a generalist and in microbiology for those additionally serving as a microbiology tech
- Performs phlebotomy procedures to include bleeding times, blood cultures, heel sticks, venipunctures, capillary blood gasses, finger sticks, and cord blood gasses an all appropriate age groups
- Performs secretarial functions to include greeting and admitting customers, answering of telephones, verification and ordering of laboratory tests, and reporting of lab results by phone and fax
- Assists other staff members during times of increased workload
- Consults with and advises physicians, nursing and coworkers on laboratory issues and topics
- Participates in quality improvement and competency activities
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Satisfaction of CLIA requirements for personnel performing moderately and highly complex testing including the following:
- Associate degree or equivalent defined as:
- Completion of a 50 week U.S. Military medical laboratory training program or graduation from a medical laboratory or accredited clinical laboratory training program may replace the Associate degree described above.
- Passage of the certification exam for MLT (AMT) or MLT (ASCP) or is eligible to sit for and must pass the exam within 6 months of hiring.
- American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS
- Reads and comprehends instructions, policies and procedures
- Applies common sense to carry out instructions given in written and oral form
- Reasons and makes critical judgments
- Mentally alert and detail oriented, capable of dealing with a diversity of tasks and interruptions

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR JOB TITLE: Laboratory Director
Position Summary
courses or 24 semester hours of science courses, including 6 hours each of
chemistry and biology, and 12 hours in chemistry, biology or medical
laboratory technology, or any combination; and
b. Completion of an accredited clinical laboratory or medical laboratory training
program, which may be included in the 60 semester hours specified above or
3 months documented training in each specialty in which the individual
performs high complexity testing.
OR
Light Work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible.
