    Job Title: School Psychologist

    Department: Pupil Personnel

    Reports to: Principal

    FLSA Status: Exempt

    Pay Scale: Administration B

    General Description:

    Evaluates the needs of average, gifted, disabled, and emotionally disturbed children within the educational system or school, and plans and carries out programs to enable children to attain maximum achievement and adjustment by performing the following duties.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
    • Performs individual psycho-educational assessment of students.
    • Administers and analyzes results of psychological test batteries, which may include tests of intelligence, personality, perception, and achievement.
    • Interprets the evaluations to parents and school personnel.
    • Prepares psychological reports outlining problems, their probable courses, and recommended remedial measures such as curricular adjustment, special learning materials, environmental improvements, class placements, behavior modification programs, and referral to outside agencies.
    • Participates in child study, and IEP sessions, including presenting required data to local screening committees and co-presenting to eligibility committees.
    • Interprets, explains, and promotes program goals and procedures to target or broad-based constituencies and/or participants as appropriate.
    • Coordinates specialized training, workshops, clinics, and conferences to carry out an activity, program, or initiative objectives or departmental or division-wide goals; field tests curriculum materials, instructional techniques, tests, and evaluation instruments.
    • Meets periodically or regularly with teachers, school-based and non-school-based administrators, community groups/agency staff, or advisory groups as required, collaborating with them on sub-function related activities.
    • Assesses and evaluates program effectiveness; maintains program data; writes reports; maintains documents, reports, and data files.
    • Counsels pupils individually and in groups to assist pupils to achieve personal, social, and emotional adjustment.
    • Advises teachers and other school personnel on methods to enhance school and classroom atmosphere to provide a motivating educational environment.
    • Serves as a consultant to the school board, superintendent, administrative committees, and parent-teacher groups in matters involving psychological services within the educational system or school.
    • Conducts short-term individual and/or group counseling whenever possible.
    • Performs related work as required or assigned.
    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    1. Good knowledge of psychological theories and practices and the ability to apply knowledge to the needs and requirements of a public school system.
    2. Good knowledge of psycho-educational assessment and testing tools, methods and procedures and ability to analyze results, and to make professionally sound recommendations based on assessment.
    3. Good knowledge of federal, state, local legislation and policies relevant to assignment.
    4. Ability to conduct and interpret psychological test, present data to school staff, parents, other professionals in the field and write clear concise reports.
    5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, and school personnel.
    6. Ability to plan, organize, implement, assess, and modify activities/goals of the sub-function to which assigned and to lead and participate in all activities.
    7. Ability to secure and retain harmonious working relationships with program constituencies, both within and without the school system.
    8. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing.
    9. Good organizational, human relations and communication skills.
    Education, Training, and Experience Requirement:
    • Master's degree (M.A.) in school Psychology
    • At least four years of experience is desired.
    • Hold Commonwealth of Virginia Pupil Personnel License, with endorsement in School Psychology.
    Physical Attributes/Demands:

    Work requires normal physical attributes required for walking, standing, sitting, operating office equipment, communicating equipment, lifting, moving, carrying light equipment, supplies, etc.

    Some assignments involve exposure to risks associated in dealing with emotional parents and students. Most assignments include activities in schools, centers, in the community, and require one to have arrange for own transportation. Some assignments are subject to deadlines and inherent in tailoring delivering programs to meet the needs of many divergent groups.
