    Minimum Qualifications

    • Successful completion of an American Bar Association-approved legal research assistant program and three (3) years of experience as a Legal Assistant:
    • OR Successful completion of an American Bar Association-approved legal research assistant program and five (5) years of experience as a legal secretary with the major responsibility involving trial preparation, identifying and gathering documents, legal research, and preliminary identification and interviewing of witnesses and similar trial preparation activities;
    • OR Eight (8) years of experience as a legal secretary (or employment in a law office regardless of title) with the major responsibility involving trial preparation, including document control, deposition summaries, legal research preliminary identification and interviewing of witnesses, and similar trial preparation activities.
    • OR A bachelor's degree and four (4) years of experience as a legal assistant

    Job Responsibilities

    • To provide legal support services for the DHS Legal Services attorneys in connection with finalizing adoptions for clients who are adopting children in DHS custody.
    • To provide legal support services to other DHS Legal Services attorneys in the areas of child welfare and adult protective services.
    • Drafting routine legal pleadings and documents, initiating, organizing, and maintaining case files; communicating with prospective adoptive parents; gathering of information from agency sources; interacting with attorneys, and court personnel; distributing the mail.
    • Administrative duties include, ordering closing cases and preparing them for archiving.

    COMPLEXITY OF SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    • Knowledge of legal procedures and documents; of the rules relating to civil procedure, pleading, and discovery; of the rules of evidence pertinent to field investigations; of the sources of information used in locating records and persons; of interviewing techniques; of legal report-writing techniques; and of legal terminology.
    • Skill in conducting legal research; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with attorneys and witnesses; preparing materials for use in court; and evaluating, summarizing, and reporting results of research.
    • Ability to use superior communication skills, both oral and written, utilizing different communication styles; to present to diverse audiences, specifically racial, ethnical, socioeconomic, and disabilities.
    • Ability to consider the impacts of the work and perspectives of multiple communities in technical analysis and outcomes of a decision-making process.
