Job Summary:

The Jail Chaplain provides spiritual guidance, pastoral care, and religious support to incarcerated individuals, their families, and staff within the correctional facility. The Chaplain ensures that inmates have the opportunity to practice their religious faith in accordance with applicable laws, facility policies, and security requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Provide pastoral care, counseling, and crisis intervention to inmates, staff, and families.

· Lead worship services, prayer groups, Bible studies, and other faith-based programs.

· Facilitate access to religious services, materials, and volunteers representing diverse faiths.

· Coordinate and supervise volunteer clergy and religious organizations entering the facility.

· Ensure compliance with constitutional requirements regarding freedom of religion and facility policies.

· Assist inmates in spiritual development, personal reflection, and rehabilitation efforts.

· Provide grief counseling, suicide prevention support, and crisis response when needed.

· Work collaboratively with jail staff to support safety, order, and rehabilitation.

· Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries at all times.

· Document services provided, maintain program records, and submit reports as required.

· Any and all other duties as assigned.

· Regular and reliable attendance.

Qualifications:

· Bachelor's Degree in Theology, Divinity, Religious Studies, or related field or equivalent experience.

· Ordination or recognized standing in a faith tradition.

· Minimum of 2–3 years of pastoral or chaplaincy experience (correctional or institutional setting preferred).

· Endorsement from recognized faith body or denominational authority.

· Must pass background check and comply with facility security protocols.

· Get along with superiors, peers, and subordinates.

  • Able to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Precise attention to details.
  • Manage time-sensitive projects and multiple priorities.
  • Work under pressure and effectively handle high volume workloads.
  • Complete assigned projects without strict supervision.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of pastoral counseling techniques, crisis intervention, and grief support.
  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse cultural, spiritual, and religious backgrounds.
  • Understanding of correctional environments and security procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to recruit, train, and supervise volunteers.
  • Ability to remain calm and compassionate in high-stress situations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work is performed within a secure correctional environment.
  • May require evenings, weekends, and holiday availability.
  • Regular interaction with inmates in varying stages of rehabilitation and crisis.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization's facilities.
  • Bend, stretch, reach, grasp.
  • Will work in proximity of firearms and other weapons.
  • Will work in proximity of inmates.

Job Type: Contract

Pay: $ $29.00 per hour

Expected hours: 15 – 25 per week
