Job Title:    Lower School STEAM Teacher

Reports to:  Head School of Lower School

FLSA Status:  Exempt

Job Summary:

The Lower School STEAM Teacher designs and facilitates engaging, developmentally appropriate lessons and learning experiences that integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.  Through the planning of hands-on, inquiry-based instruction that aligns with the School's mission and strategic priorities, this teacher fosters curiosity, creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration.  The STEAM teacher partners with classroom and other enrichment teachers to support interdisciplinary learning and ensures that STEAM and design thinking are used purposefully and responsibly to enhance student learning.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a member of the School's STEAM Team.

  • Plans and develops engaging, age-appropriate STEAM lessons for Kg-5th grade students, adhering to educational best practices and curriculum guidelines.

  • Designs hands-on, project-based learning experiences that promote inquiry, experimentation, problem-solving, and reflective thinking.

  • Maintains training on the equipment and resources in the School's Innovation Center and incorporates some 4th and 5th grade classes into this space

  • Designs and presents individual lesson plans using a variety of teaching techniques that appeal to various learning styles and methods.

  • Collaborates with classroom teachers to support interdisciplinary connections and reinforce/enhance classroom learning

  • Prepares materials for lessons and activities; observes and assesses student learning using developmentally appropriate methods.

  • Provides clear, constructive feedback focused on process, effort, and problem-solving skills.

  • Manages student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures.

  • Creates a safe, inclusive, and well-organized STEAM learning environment.

  • Models curiosity, flexibility, and resilience in problem-solving.

  • Communicates all progress and concerns with tact and professionalism to parents and, as appropriate, other faculty, staff, and/or division head.

  • Builds and maintains positive relationships with students, parents/guardians, and colleagues.

  • Enforces safety and security standards for students, staff, and visitors.

  • Maintains accurate and complete records for individual student progress, files, attendance and incident reports, and other necessary records.

  • Participates in faculty meetings, educational conferences, in-service opportunities, workshops, and other training seminars.

  • Maintains knowledge of research, developments, and best practices in appropriate levels of STEAM education.

  • Supports and upholds school policies, procedures, and the School's mission, vision, and values.

  • Prepares classroom for class activities at the beginning of the school year; inventory, pack and organize classroom for summer use.

  • Participates in extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs, and student organizations as directed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

  • Thorough understanding of pedagogy and the best practices of education.

  • Desire to teach and ability to adapt to varied developmental status.

  • Ability to design lessons that extend curriculum in an engaging manner, applying various teaching methods..

  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills to manage and control the classroom.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to maintain professionalism and tact in high-stress situations.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Creative analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Demonstrated use of relevant technology, including equipment in the School's Innovation Center,  to support and differentiate instruction.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education or related subject required; Master's degree preferred; or two to four years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Teaching license preferred.

  • Previous teaching experience preferred.

  • CPR certification preferred.

Physical Requirements with or without accommodations: 

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer or standing to teach.

  • Must be able to lift or move up to 40 pounds at times. 

  • Must be able to traverse classroom and adjust one's tone and height, by bending, leaning, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling in order to teach each child.  

  • Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception.
