    Where the chemistry happens...

    As a Breeding Technician you will assist the Melon breeding team to plan, monitor, implement and provide input relating to the operational breeding process to ensure the long-term profitability and success of the breeding program.

    During your time as a Breeding Technician you will...

    • Assist in maintaining a safe, healthy and hygienic work environment and be skilled at making successful hybrid crosses and inbred multiplications in the crop under consideration including maintaining genetic integrity.
    • Understand types of selections and methods of seed harvest/extraction and cleaning. Be proficient at the different methods used in the program and work with information from the breeder, manage or assist in the correct harvesting and processing of material [Fruit/seed] through to packaging of the biomaterial, keeping track of progress and recording required data.

    • For some crops learn and become competent in seed Inventory and be comfortable with and competent in undertaking protocols in processing seed or biomaterial for quality analysis, quality control, molecular marker sampling and other testing.

    • Monitor biomaterial storage and take remedial action when necessary to ensure sufficient material is available for seed production and assist farming in growing and maintaining healthy plants in the environments needed by the crop under consideration [greenhouse / net house / open field] from sowing through to seed harvest and termination of the crop in coordination with the breeder.

    • Assist with monitoring of crop and modification of plant growing environment, including pest and disease scouting, to ensure optimum plant growth and understand planting plans and experimental designs provided by breeder for fields and greenhouses and assist with accurate sowing or transplanting.

    • Travel to screening locations to assist with planting and data collection and supervise, train and record 3rd. party or temporary labor crews.

    If you...

    • Have a High school diploma or GED (required).

    • Associate Degree or B.Sc. in Horticulture, Agronomy or Plant Breeding (a plus).

    • Own additional plant breeding courses or previous experience (a plus).
