    TITLE: FISHERIES TECHNICIAN I
    SUPERVISOR: PROGRAM MANAGER
    DEPARTMENT: DNR, FISHERIES
    STATUS: TEMPORARY, FULL-TIME, NON-EXEMPT
    LOCATION: WELLPINIT, WA
    SALARY / GRADE: $18.00 / PER HOUR

    INTRODUCTION:

    Work within the Spokane Tribal Fisheries Department assisting Lake Roosevelt Sturgeon Recovery Project biologists with White Sturgeon recovery efforts. Techs will assist biologists with extensive field work (typically 10 hrs/day, 4 days/week, in possibly inclement weather conditions), data collection (biometric data, abundance data, ageing, etc.), maintenance of boats and survey gear (telemetry equipment, setlines, etc.), and preform data entry. During larval collection efforts (June-July) techs will be required to work holidays, nights, and weekends. Techs will be extensively trained in various field and laboratory safety protocols and will be provided personal protective equipment including footwear, life jackets, and rain gear. Techs will be expected to maintain a weekly log of their activities and accomplishments. Techs will learn how and why fisheries data are collected to inform management actions which preserve and enhance sturgeon within Lake Roosevelt. If needed, techs may also assist on other field projects including Fall Walleye Index Netting, Northern Pike suppression, and other fisheries surveys. Tech will be responsible for other duties as assigned. Must be able to work from mid June through the end of October.

    MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Assist with adult stock assessment surveys using set lines.
    • Assist with larval collections efforts for the conservation aquaculture program.
    • Assist with acoustic telemetry downloads and maintenance.
    • Assist with annual recruitment monitoring using small hook set lines.
    • Aid in data input into Microsoft Excel.
    • Assist with sample organization and archiving.
    • General equipment (boats and sampling gear) and facility maintenance.
    • Assist in other fisheries monitoring using electrofishing, gillnetting, and seining gear.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

    • Willing and able to function as an entry-level fishery technician.
    • Punctual, safety oriented, and willing to work long days in field and office settings.
    • Reliable transportation to/from Fisheries offices in Wellpinit or Airway Heights.
    • Able to work in a professional setting with co-workers, and the public.
    • Ability to work individually and in group settings.
    • Able to understand and follow safety and data collection/data entry protocols.
    • Willing to work in inclement weather (heat, wind, rain, exposure, swift water).
    • Willing to work flexible and long hours in office and field when necessary.
    • Willing and able to work effectively in supervised and non-supervised settings.
    • Willing to travel which will include overnight stays in hotels (travel, lodging and meal costs will be covered by the STF Department).
    • Willing to learn about regional Tribal and Federal programs and processes.
    • Willing to spend long hours in training/research/reading settings.
    • Able (or willing to learn how) to enter data into MS Excel and utilize data collection applications.
    • Willing to work long hours on a boat in a large, deep reservoir, sometimes in remote areas.
    • Able to handle extended periods of sun exposure with limited access to restroom facilities.
    • Able to pack and carry 30lbs over various terrain.
    • Must be able to work from mid June through the end of October.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Completed High School Diploma or G.E.D.
    • Good employment history with references.
    • Valid State Driver's License and good driving record.
    • Must have computer knowledge and skills for data entry.
    • Must be able to travel and stay overnight for up to 5 days at a time.
    • Must be able to work holidays, nights, and weekends.
    • Must be physically capable of performing job duties, at times in adverse weather conditions and rough terrain/waters.

    PREFERRED REQUISITIES:

    • Previous fisheries experience.
    • Strong organizational and planning skills.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team setting.
    • Ability to follow established protocols.
    • Ability to work un-supervised.
    • Microsoft Office experience.
